SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State swatted seven home runs, including three from Cole Coffey, capitalizing on gusting winds at Bobcat Ballpark to defeat Houston, 15-9 and even the three-game series on Saturday afternoon.
Texas State's 20 hits were the most allowed by the Cougars (9-5) this season and most since permitting 21 at Marshall on April 5, 2013. The 15 runs allowed were the most since ECU produced as many on April 6, 2019.
Texas State (7-9) scored in five consecutive innings including plating four runs in the second. The Bobcats received back-to-back home runs from Coffey and Bryce Bonner among five hits in the frame to chase Houston starter Ben Sears from the game.
Sears lasted just 1.1 innings, allowing five hits and four runs while walking another. The right-hander entered the contest having tossed at least 5.0 innings while allowing three or fewer earned runs in each of his previous three starts.
Sean Bretz (0-1) drew the loss, permitting the go-ahead solo home run to Johnny Gonzales in the third. The right-hander allowed three runs on two hits and three walks.
Houston battled back from its early deficit, tying the game at four in the third. Rivas swatted a three-run home run, his seventh of the season, to even things up after Brandon Uhse reached on a throwing error and Tyler Bielamowicz was awarded first on a catcher's interference.
Hernandez led off the sixth with a solo home run onto the adjacent softball field, at the time, trimming Houston's deficit to three runs at 8-5. Coffey led off the home half, grabbing the run back for Texas State with his second homer of the contest.
Texas State pushed across six runs on seven hits in the eighth inning, spoiling the Houston debuts for MacGregor Hines and Patrick Dunn. The Bobcats clocked three homers in the frame including the third of the day from Coffey.

The result spoiled a spectacular afternoon from Houston outfielder Steven Rivas (3-for-5) who clobbered two home runs, including a grand slam with two away in the ninth inning. His seven RBIs marked the most for a Houston player since Corey Julks accomplished the feat on May 12, 2017 at Tulane.
Sunday's rubber match is set for at 1 p.m. Texas State will send right-hander Zeke Wood (1-1, 3.45 ERA) to the mound. Houston has not announced a starter. The Cougars kept things within reach thanks to some defensive gems. The Bobcats left the bases loaded in the fourth as Rivas tracked down a ball down the right field line and left them loaded in the fifth as Hernandez stabbed a line drive to his left.OUTTA HERE! WHO ELSE? 🚀
