Houston wins rainy battle against North Texas

HOUSTON - The Houston tennis team rallied to defeat North Texas, 4-2, on Thursday afternoon in a match split between both outdoor and indoor facilities due to rain.

After the Cougars (5-2) dropped the doubles point, freshman Blanca Cortijo Parreno earned Houston its first point of the day with a sweep on court six, 6-0, 6-1. From there the Mean Green (2-3) stole only one more individual match, while the Cougars reeled off three more to close out the afternoon. Halfway through the match rain began to fall, prompting a move to a nearby indoor facility.

The clinching victory came from Azul Pedemonti who battled 6-0, 4-6, 6-4, to earn the the win.

In the top singles spot, Mimi Kendall-Woseley dropped the first set, but dominated the final pair to win 4-6, 6-2, 6-1. Phonexay Chitdara also won a hard fought match in the second singles spot, 6-4, 7-5. Elsewhere, Gabriela Giraldo, Azul Pedemonti, and Cortijo all won their singles matches.

The lone doubles pair to win in the first part of the day was the duo of Chitdara and Giraldo.

Houston has not fallen to North Texas since April 2016 and has only lost to the Mean Green twice in eight attempts.

The Cougars return to action quickly with a pair of matches this weekend against Louisiana and Wichita State at home.
