Houston hosts Louisiana, Wichita State
HOUSTON - The Cougars roll into a busy stretch of games as they welcome their second and third opponents to Houston in the span of four days. On Saturday, Houston will welcome Louisiana for a 1 p.m. CT match on Saturday before Wichita State comes to town for a 10 a.m. CT meeting on Sunday.
Sunday's match against the Shockers will be the Cougars' first American Athletic Conference battle of the season. Last season, Houston won its lone AAC match before the cancellation of the season due to COVID-19.Â
Fans will be able to follow along the action on Twitter and through our live stats page.Â
Scouting the Opposition
Houston is 2-0 in program history against Louisiana with those victories coming in 2005 and 2008. The Ragin Cajuns are 4-2 this season with victories over Incarnate Word and McNeese State, two common opponents with the Cougars this season. Houston also defeated those two programs.
On Sunday the Cougars look to take the all-time series from the Shockers as they are 1-1 against Wichita State, with Houston claiming victory in their last meeting on February 8, 2019. That victory over the Shockers came in head coach Helena Besovic's first season at the helm. Wichita State is off to a 3-6 start this season with three consecutive losses heading into the weekend.Â
Thursday's Success
On Thursday, the Cougars toppled North Texas 4-2 behind a slew of singles success. After dropping the doubles point, Houston earned victories from Mimi Kendall-Woseley, Phonexay Chitdara, Gabriela Giraldo, and Azul Pedemonti. The victory came after an 18-day lay off due to winter weather and ensuing complications.Â
That victory improved the Cougars to 5-2 this season for the first time since the 2018-19 season.Â
