Houston Earns Four Titles on Opening Day of Championships

Cougars record program record in 200 Freestyle Relay
DALLAS – The University of Houston Swimming & Diving team won four events on the opening day of action at the 2021 American Athletic Conference Championships.
The Houston seniors paced UH as Mykenzie Leehy and Ioanna Sacha each earned individual titles. Houston closed out the day with 307 points, 67 points in front of second-place SMU.

Houston got things going early with a program record and first-place finish in the 200 Freestyle Relay. Rachel Hicks, Leehy, Kathryn Power and Hannah Farmer combined for a time of 1:29.99, shaving almost a second off the previous program best.
Cougar freshman Laura Garcia Marin earned her first conference podium finish with a second-place finish in the 500 Free. She finished just shy of her lifetime best at 4:47.90. Samantha Medlin earned a fourth-place finish with a time of 4:50.62. Elizabeth Richardson closed out the day with a top finish in the B-Final at 4:53.19.
In the 200 IM the Cougars earned their fifth consecutive title in the event, as Sacha earned her second straight. Sacha took the lead early and never let up, finishing with a time of 1:58.01. Mai Ortega Bonilla earned her first collegiate podium finish, clocking in at 2:01.65 for third-place.
Leehy showed why she entered the meet the favorite in the 50 Freestyle, earning her second straight title in the event at 22.54. Power finished second right her Leehy with the third-fastest time in program history and lifetime best of 22.77.
On the boards, Katie Deininger led the way for UH with a fourth-place finish in the 1-Meter with a score 277.15. Houston took sixth through 10th-place in the event as Emilia Waters finished sixth with a score of 267.20, followed by Jolie Blodgett (7th; 261.85) and Chase Farris ( 8th; 249.35). Hedda Grelz won the Consolation Final with a total of 267.90, followed by Makayla Wallar in 10th-place at 253.85.
In the final event of the day Sacha, Audrey McKinnon, Katie Higgins and Leehy combined for a time of 3:36.10 in the 400 Medley Relay to win the event for the fourth straight year.
