Cougars Stomp Tigers With Eight Goals
2/10/2021 9:14:00 PM | Soccer
Houston scores most goals since 2011
The eight goals are the team's most in a game under Head Coach Diego Bocanegra, who took the helm in December 2016.The last time the program scored this many goals came on Sept. 9, 2011, also against nearby Texas Southern. The eight goals is the sixth-highest total in program history, with five of those games against Texas Southern and the other against Nicholls. All six of those offensive showcases have come at home for the program. The program's highest-ever output came on Sept. 17, 2004, with 14 goals against Texas Southern.Â
Houston's firepower was led by forwards Caleigha Callahan and Natalie Andereson who each put two balls in the back of the net. The goals marked the first of Callahan's career after missing the 2019 season with injury and seeing limited playing time as an underclassman.Â
The additional tallies were provided by Jazmin Grant, Amy Nguyen, Mia Brascia, and Zionah Browne. Four of the five all goalscorers hail from the Lone Star State.Â
The fun started early for the Cougars with two goals in the first 15 minutes of the game, one by Anderson and one by Callahan. The six-goal avalanche began in the second half when Nguyen put home a tough-angle shot past the keeper only 50 seconds into the period.Â
While their offense was humming, the Cougars' defense took care of the shutout of the Tigers. Keepers Mikaela Gracia and Kate Godfrey combined to pitch the shutout, the Cougars second this season when including their exhibition. In those 270 total minutes, the Cougars have surrendered only one goal. Since that lone goal late in the first half against Houston Baptist the Cougars have seen nearly 138 minutes tick off the clock without surrendering another.Â
Up, next Houston travels to Greenville, N.C., to square up with ECU at 4 p.m. for the Cougars' American Athletic Conference opener.
