Coogs Drop American Athletic Conference Opener
The Houston Cougars soccer team fell 1-0 in overtime to the East Carolina Pirates in Greenville, North Carolina, on Saturday evening.
Including tonight's result, four of the past five meetings between these two programs have gone into extra time.
The teams were even for much of the game as both teams had the same number of shots on goal, corner kicks, and saves after the first half. The Cougars finished the night with a 5-3 advantage in shots on goal, but couldn't ultimately come up with the decisive goal.
Houston had several chances on their attack throughout the night with Mia Brascia leading the team with three shots, two of which wound up on frame.
The Coogs pushed through the final minute of regulation, but came up short with a ball clanging off of the crossbar and sending the game into overtime.
In net, Salma Ghazal continued to shine with only one goal allowed in over 95 minutes of play. Ghazal has now surrendered only two goals in her 185 minutes on the field this season.
The lone goal of the game came in the 96th minute off of the Pirates' 8th corner kick of the night. It marks the first time the Pirates have come out victorious over the Cougars since 2015.
Houston now returns home for a two-game homestand as they welcome in-state opponents University of Texas - San Antonio and SMU to town.
