Cougars set new records and standards in 2021
HOUSTON – Houston Soccer completed its most impressive and record-breaking season to date, finishing 13-5-2 overall and 5-2-1 in the American Athletic Conference.
Â
The Cougars set a new standard for the program with its new record of wins with 13, the most since the 2010 season. Three of those wins included defeats over top-25 nationally-ranked teams, another first for Houston Soccer.
Â
In addition to 18 different goal scorers throughout the 20-game spread, the Cougars only allowed five total goals in conference play. In 2020, Houston had its first winning season since 2010 which continued into 2021 where Houston has now seen its first back-to-back winning seasons ever for the program.
Â
Due to the regular season schedule's success, Houston began receiving regional and national recognition. The United Soccer Coaches' Poll regionally ranked Houston Soccer third in the South Region. Meanwhile, the Cougars also began receiving votes in the national rankings. Both accomplishments were program firsts for Houston.
Â
The hard work throughout the regular season schedule led the Cougars to its second American conference tournament. Houston received a second-place finish in the conference granting the Cougars a bye for the quarterfinals round of competition. Houston Soccer traveled to Tampa to begin its tournament run in a semifinals berth. The Cougars finished with its highest end-of-season RPI of 54.
Â
Houston's success throughout the fall also resulted in conference recognition. The coaching staff was named The American Coaching Staff of the Year. Redshirt senior Jazmin Grant was named to the All-Conference First Team while redshirt senior Mia Brascia and senior Emma Clarke were named to Second Team. Clarke was recognized as part of The American All-Tournament Team as well. Freshman Samantha Wiehe also found herself named to the All-Conference Rookie Team. United Soccer Coaches later announced its All-Region team with Grant and Clarke named to First Team and Brascia named to Second Team.
Â
The Cougars' success throughout the 2021 season sets new records and benchmarks for the program as it looks to continue its climb in 2022.
