Cougars travel to Cancun Challenge for Thanksgiving weekend matchups

Women's basketball will take on Arizona State, Fordham and Baylor in Cancun, Mexico
HOUSTON – For the Thanksgiving break, the Houston women's basketball team will travel to Cancun, Mexico, for the Cancun Challenge at the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya Convention Center from Nov. 25-27.

SCOUTING THE FIELD.
Arizona State holds a 2-2 record taking wins over Northern Colorado and Marist. The Sun Devils went 1-2 in the WNIT last season and return veteran players Taya Hanson and Jayda Van Hyfte.
Fordham holds a 3-1 record with its only loss coming to Notre Dame last Thursday. The Rams also played in the WNIT last season and picked to finish third in the Atlantic 10 preseason coaches poll.
Baylor will be the first ranked team the Cougars will play this season. The Bears are coming off a close game against Maryland losing 79-76.
12 3-POINTERS. In the game against New Mexico, the Cougars scored 12 3-pointers. It was the fifth time in school history that a team has scored 12+ 3-pointers in a single game and third time the team has scored 12 the most recent coming against SMU in 2019.
VIVA LA MEXICO. This marks the third time the women's basketball team has traveled outside the United States over Thanksgiving weekend under Coach Hughey. During Coach Hughey's inaugural season in 2014-15, the Cougars traveled to Puerto Rice before going to Canada in the 2019-20 season.
75 YEARS OF HOUSTON ATHLETICS. During the 2021-22 season, Houston Athletics will celebrate its 75th anniversary by recognizing its championship tradition, award-winning student-athletes and coaches and memorable moments from its rich history.
HOME COURT ADVANTAGE. The Cougars are currently 2-0 when playing at home. The win over New Mexico was the Cougars second of the season after beating Howard in the season opener
HOT HANDS. Laila Blair tied her career-high points against New Mexico scoring 19. The sophomore also connected on three 3-pointers to also tie her career-high. Dymond Gladney also recorded a career-high with nine assists while Tatyana Hill grabbed a new career-high of five steals against New Mexico.
