Cornerback recognized as defensive player of week
HOUSTON – For the sixth time in his career and fifth time this season, Houston Football cornerback Marcus Jones has been recognized with a weekly American Athletic Conference honor.
Jones, a senior from Enterprise, Alabama, has been named The American's Defensive Player of the Week following his standout performance in Houston's 31-13 win against Memphis over the weekend, the league office announced Monday.
Jones became the first FBS player this season and second player in American Athletic Conference history to record two-plus interceptions and three-plus pass breakups in a game. The Paul Hornung Award Finalist contributed six tackles, recorded two picks and three passes defended as Houston registered its 10th consecutive victory.
His sixth career weekly American honor is the most for any active defense or special teams' player and is second only to Cincinnati quarterback Desmond Ridder (7) among all players. Houston players have been recognized with 10 weekly honors this season.
Houston, which checked in at No. 16 in the USA Today Coaches Poll and No. 19 in the AP Top 25 on Sunday, went undefeated in conference play for the second time in program history. Houston is the only FBS program in Texas to record multiple undefeated conference seasons (2021, 2011) since 2011.
