Houston Opens 2021 Season at TCU Tournament

Cougars to play in three-day event
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Tennis program is set to begin its 2021 season at the TCU Tournament in Fort Worth, Texas, inside the Bayar H. Friedman Tennis Center, Jan. 9-11.

Houston begins season play on Saturday at 4 p.m. with four doubles matches against Texas A&M, followed by eight singles matches. Sunday's action starts at 9:30 a.m., as the Cougars take on host-TCU for one doubles and three singles, along with Rice for three doubles and eight singles.

The Cougars wrap up the three-day event on Monday, when Houston faces Texas A&M at 1 p.m. for one doubles and two singles, before squaring up with Central Arkansas at 5:30 p.m. Houston's contest with Central Arkansas will consist of three doubles and six singles.

MEET THE COOGS
Houston returns eight student-athletes from the 2020 season that was cut short as a result of COVID-19. Among those returning are seniors Phonexay Chitdara and Mimi Kendall-Woseley, along with junior Stephanie Belovukovic. The trio combined to go 29-11 in 2020 with Chitdara and Kendall-Woseley posting a team-best 10 wins each.

After completing the 2020 campaign on a three-match winning streak to finish the season with a 6-3 record, the doubles team of redshirt junior Elena Tairyan and junior Jovana Vukovic also returns for 2021.

The Cougars welcome three freshman for the 2021 season in Blanco Cortijo Parreno, Gabriela Giraldo and Laura Slisane. Cortijo Parreno hails from Spain and reached the quarterfinals of the W15 Palmanova in 2020, while Giraldo, a native of Columbia, won the J4 Guayaquil Singles Tournament in 2019, and Slisane, a product of Latvia, was crowned the J4 Tallinn Champion in 2019.
