Houston Opens Spring Season at UCF Challenge

Cougars ready to compete in three-day, 54-hole tournament in Orlando, beginning Sunday
ORLANDO – For the first time in more than 10 months, the University of Houston Women's Golf program returns to the course to compete in the UCF Challenge at Eagle Creek Golf Club on Sunday morning.
The Cougars were competing in their practice round at the Clover Cup in Arizona on March 12, 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of the remainder of the season.

THE FIELD
The Cougars will compete against Arkansas, Charleston, Iowa State, Kennesaw State, Kentucky, Miami (Fla.), Michigan State, Mississippi State, NC State, Penn State, Purdue, UNC Wilmington, Virginia, Wake Forest and host UCF.
THE LINEUP
Under the leadership of Head Coach Gerrod Chadwell, Houston will be represented by sophomore Karen Fredgaard, freshman Anne Normann, senior Ariana Saenz, freshman Zoe Slaughter and junior Annie Kim.
Fredgaard was the Cougars' leading performer a year ago. The Asserbo, Denmark, native paced the Cougars with a 71.33 scoring average and 12 rounds of par or lower, including five in the 60s.
Fredgaard earned a second-place finish at the White Sands Invitational in October 2020 and recently earned an invitation to compete at the Augusta National Women's Amateur in April. As one of the world's leading amateur players, Fredgaard was scheduled to compete in the 2020 tournament before the COVID-19 pandemic forced its cancellation.
Kim finished third among the Cougars a year ago with a 74.17 scoring average and six rounds of par or better, tying with Saenz in the latter category.
Normann and Slaughter both will be making their collegiate debuts.

UP NEXT
Following the UCF Challenge, the Cougars open the month of February at the Texas State Invitational on Feb. 8-9 at Plum Creek Golf Course in Kyle, Texas.
From there, Houston will play host to its own ICON Invitational on Feb. 22-23 at Golf Club of Houston. The Cougars welcome an elite field, including Baylor, Kent State, LSU, Michigan State, North Texas, Northwestern, Oklahoma State, Purdue, SMU, TCU, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas State and Texas Tech.
