Slaughter, who prepped at Houston's Memorial Senior High School, started her day with a birdie at No. 10 on the 6,349-yard, par-72 layout. After five straight pars, she added another birdie on the par-5 16th hole and then capped the round with 11 straight pars to stand in a tie for 15th.
Slaughter joined teammates sophomore Karen Fredgaard, senior Ariana Saenz and junior Annie Kim at 2-under 70.
As a team, the Cougars stood in fifth place at 8-under 280 following the first 18 holes. It was Houston's first action in competition since preparing for its practice round at the Clover Cup in Arizona on March 12, 2020, a span covering more than 10 months.
Arkansas held the team lead at 273 with Kent State (276), Miami (Fla.) (277) and Wake Forest (277) rounding out the Top-4 leaders.
Penn State (284), Virginia (285), Mississippi State (286), Kentucky (289) and host UCF (290) completed the Top 10
Kim led the Cougars with six birdies in her opening round of the season. Like Slaughter, she made birdie on No. 10 and overcame a bogey on No. 11 with two birdies in a three-hole stretch on Nos. 14-16.
After a pair of bogeys on No. 18 and No. 1, the Seoul native drained back-to-back birdies on Nos. 3-4 and rallied from her final bogey of the day with her final birdie on No. 6.
Fredgaard enjoyed five birdies in her round Sunday. The Asserbo, Denmark, native opened with a birdie on No 10 and rallied from two bogeys in her next five holes with consecutive birdies on Nos. 16-17.
After three straight pars and a bogey on No. 3, Fredgaard added back-to-back birdies again, this time on Nos. 4-5.
Saenz enjoyed four birdies in her first 17 holes to join the Cougars at 70.
Making her collegiate debut, freshman Anne Normann was tied for 45th at 73.
Kent State's Emily Price held the individual lead at 65 with Wake Forest's Rachel Kuehn and Arkansas teammates Ela Anacona and Cory Lopez tied for second at 66. Miami (Fla.)'s Kristyna Frydlova stood in fifth at 68.

UP NEXT
Following the UCF Challenge, the Cougars open the month of February at the Texas State Invitational on Feb. 8-9 at Plum Creek Golf Course in Kyle, Texas.
From there, Houston will play host to its own ICON Invitational on Feb. 22-23 at Golf Club of Houston. The Cougars welcome an elite field, including Baylor, Kent State, LSU, Michigan State, North Texas, Northwestern, Oklahoma State, Purdue, SMU, TCU, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas State and Texas Tech.
