Mae Woods gives back to Houston Community
Over the past few months people across the globe have been tasked with re-examining how they tackle day-to-day life in the wake of the COVID-19 Pandemic. From home schooling to online grocery delivery, many people are facing a new way of life. Houston graduate Mae Woods is no exception and has taken it upon herself to help make the transition easier for thousands of people via a website called Howbsy.
A 2014 graduate of the University of Houston and member of the Houston Women's Basketball team from 2010-1014, Woods and her business partner collaborated for the creation of Howbsy.com. The female-founded website shows store wait times and is powered by its more than 100,000 users.
Seeing how frustrated her mother was with wait times at her favorite stores, Woods and her business partner, Pan Khantidhara, came up with a platform that allows its users to help their communities by inputting wait times while shopping. The platform is not limited to grocery stores and includes banks, pharmacies, hardware stores, drive-thru restaurants and liquor stores.
After the web site launched on April 24 in Canada, Woods was excited to bring the platform to "her second home" in Houston. Woods was a member of the 2011 NCAA Tournament team, earning the squad's Academic MVP award during her junior and senior seasons. She credits part of her entrepreneurial spirit to the education that she received from the Bauer School of Business and the College of Technology.
"Bauer has one of the best entrepreneurial programs in the country. The support that I have been receiving from the Bauer College and the College of Technology is amazing."
As we continue to navigate through these times, we can be comforted by the fact that there are Cougars making an impact not only in Houston but across the world.
"With so much success here is Canada, we have expanded to Houston and just want to help as many people as we can. Pan and I are not essential workers. and Howbsy.com is our way of giving back during COVID-19."
