Five Cougars Tabbed to CSCAA All-America Team

Five Cougars selected as All-Americans for the 2019-20 season
HOUSTON – The College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) selected its All-American teams for the 2019-20 season, highlighted by the selection of five Houston Cougars.

Zarena Brown, Peyton Kondis, Laura Laderoute, Mykenzie Leehy and Ioanna Sacha were named to the Division I All-American Team after qualifying for the 2020 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships that were to be held on the campus of the University of Georgia before being cancelled due to COVID-19.

"Despite the cancellation of the NCAA Championships, Coach Wochomurka did a remarkable job this season," explained Greg Earhart, Executive Director of the CSCAA. These five student-athletes had the rug pulled out from them this season, so we are excited to recognize them."

Kondis was primed for her third consecutive NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships appearance after winning two individual titles at The American Championships and earning Co-American Athletic Conference Swimmer of the Year honors. The senior holds individual program records in the 100 Breaststroke and the 200 Breaststroke, and qualified for the Olympic Trials set to take place next year.

Brown concluded her senior season with two individual conference titles and Co-American Athletic Conference Swimmer of the Year honors. The senior qualified for the NCAA Championships for the second time in her career and closes out her career as the program recordholder in the 200 Freestyle, as well as a member of four of the fastest relays in program history.

Laderoute was set for her first appearance at the NCAA Championships after winning the 100 Backstroke title at The American Championships and swimming as a member of two winning relays. The senior closes out her career as the program record holder in the 100 Backstroke.

Leehy had a stellar campaign during the 2019-20 season and was primed for her first appearance at the NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships. The junior won both the 50 Freestyle and 100 Freestyle titles at The American Championships, along with swimming in three winning relays. Leehy has qualified for the 2021 Olympic Trials and concludes the season with program records in the 50 Freestyle and 100 Freestyle.

Sacha closed out her first full season with the Cougars with conference titles in the 200 Backstroke and 200 Individual Medley. The junior qualified for her first NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships, shortly after breaking the Greek National Record in the 200 LCM Backstroke at the Houston First Chance Meet with hopes of competing for her home country at the 2021 Olympic Games.
