Houston Drops Series Opener to No. 25 Arizona

Tyler Bielamowicz goes 2-for-3
HOUSTON – The University of Houston baseball team fell 7-1 in its series opener against No. 25 Arizona on Friday at Hi Corbett Field.
The Cougars fell to 4-8, while Arizona improved to 9-4. The two teams square off again on Saturday with first pitch set for 5 p.m. CT.
KEY INNINGS
2nd | Arizona grabbed the lead in the bottom of the second inning. The Wildcats used a walk with the bases loaded to plate the game's first run. One batter later, an RBI grounded allowed Arizona to go ahead 2-0.
4th | Houston's Tyler Bielamowicz and Ryan Hernandez opened the inning with back-to-back singles. After a wild pitch moved Bielomawicz moved to third, an Arizona error allowed the senior to come around and score. The Wildcats quickly answered with a run in the bottom half to push their lead back to 3-1.
5th | A leadoff home run to begin the fifth inning gave Arizona a 4-1 lead.
6th | The Wildcats used a sacrifice fly to tack on an insurance run.
7th | Arizona put two runs in the seventh inning for the 7-1 final.
HOUSTON NOTES
Offense:
• Bielamowciz led the Cougars at the plate with a 2-for-3 effort and a run scored. The senior reached in all four plate appearances.
• Making his second straight start, Rey Mendoza finished 1-for-4.
• Derrick Cherry and Ryan Hernandez were both 1-for-4 at the plate.
Pitching:
• Senior southpaw Lael Lockhart Jr. (1-2) suffered the loss, surrendering four runs on five hits over 4.1 innings pitched. The senior recorded five strikeouts and walked four in his fourth start of the season.
• Redshirt junior Isaiah Blaylock and senior Tristen Bayless each tossed 1.1 innings of relief work.
• In his second career appearance, freshman right-hander Cole Ferguson retired the side on six pitches in the ninth.
