Seven Cougars Punch Tickets to NCAA Championships

Cougars lead The American in NCAA Championships qualifiers
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Swimming & Diving team will continue its season at the 2020 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships, sending seven student-athletes to the meet from March 18-21 in Athens, Georgia on the campus of the University of Georgia.

The Cougars will be represented at the championships by Zarena Brown, Peyton Kondis, Laura Laderoute, Mykenzie Leehy, Ioanna Sacha, Samantha Medlin and Elizabeth Richardson.

This marks the most qualifiers for the Cougars since the 1986 season. Houston will be represented in six events at the meet. Houston leads The American in qualifiers.

"We are very excited to continue our season at the NCAA Championships with these five and two relay alternates," said Head Coach Ryan Wochomurka. "We hope to build on the success from The American Championships and see if we can put some points on the board in Athens, Ga.".

Kondis will make her third straight appearance at the NCAA Championships, qualifying for the meet in the 100 Breaststroke and the 200 Breaststroke. Kondis enters the meet with the 13th-fastest time in the NCAA this season at 59.16 in the 100 Breast, and the 36th-fastest time this season among collegians in the 200 Breast 2:09.60.

Brown will return to the NCAA Championships for the second time in her career after qualifying in the 200 Freestyle. Brown posted a program-best 1:44.33 at The American Championships and enters the field with the 17th-fastest time in the NCAA field.

Laderoute will make her first NCAA Championships appearance in the 100 Backstroke after winning the event at The American Championships in February. Laderoute holds the 25th-fastest in the field at 52.47.

Leehy remains to be a force for the Cougars qualifying for her first NCAA Championships. Leehy will appear alongside Brown in the 200 Freestyle, entering the meet with the 28th-fastest time this season in the NCAA at 1:44.90.

Sacha will extend her junior season, qualifying for her first NCAA Championships in the 200 Individual Medley. Sacha currently holds the 35th-fastest time this season in the collegiate ranks at 1:57.23.

Medlin and Richardson will travel to the NCAA Championships as relay alternates for the Cougars, as the team returns to the NCAA Championships with a relay for the first time since the 1986 season. This marks the first time since the 1984 season that the Cougars will compete in the 800 Freestyle Relay at the NCAA Championships.

Divers are set to compete at the Zone D qualifiers taking place in Dallas, Texas from March 9-14 and from there qualifiers for the NCAA Championships will be determined.
