Houston takes game one of Silver Glove Series
HOUSTON – The University of Houston baseball team picked up a 6-4 win over Rice on Wednesday night at Reckling Park.

The Cougars improved to 4-7, while the Owls fell to 2-10.

Houston takes game one of the Silver Glove Series against the Owls. The two teams will meet again on March 31 at Sanders Field at Schroeder Park.
KEY INNINGS
2nd | Houston jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. After Ian McMillan opened the frame with a leadoff single, the junior later came around to score on a passed ball. Rice grabbed the lead in the bottom half of the frame with a pair of two-out base hits.

3rd | The Cougars quickly tied the game at 2-2. With the bases loaded, Brad Burckel delivered a two-out RBI single to right, plating Tyler Bielamowciz to the game. Bielamowicz opened the inning with a single to center as UH loaded the bases with walks by Steven Rivas and Derrick Cherry.

4th | In the fourth, the Cougars played station-to-station as singles by Luke Almendarez and Kyle Lovelace set the stage for Bielamowicz. The senior capitalized with his second hit of the night, plating Almendarez and Lovelace on a two-RBI single to put Houston back in front 4-2.

5th | The Cougars extended their lead to 5-2 on Ian McMillan's RBI single up the middle to score Cherry.
6th | The Owls plated two runs in the sixth to cut the UH lead down to 5-4.

8th | Bielamowicz recorded his third hit of the night with a two-out RBI double to the left-center gap, scoring Rey Mendoza to put the Cougars up 6-4.

HOUSTON NOTES
Offense:
• Bielamowicz led the way with a 3-for-4 effort, finishing with a double and three RBI.
• McMillan finished 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored.
• In his return to the starting lineup, Burckel was 1-for-2 at the plate with an RBI.
• Cherry reached base in all five plate appearances. He walked four times and was 1-for-1 with a run scored.
• Rice outhit the Cougars, 10-9.Â

Pitching:
• Sophomore right-handed pitcher Tanner Green earned his first win of the season, pitching 2.1 shutout innings out of the bullpen.
• Cherry earned the save, the first of his career. The sophomore right-hander did not allow a run and gave up three hits in 4.0 innings of relief work. Cherry struck out five and did not allow a walk in his second career appearance on the mound.
• Junior left-hander Nick Rupp made his first start of the season, throwing 2.0 innings. Rupp allowed two runs on four hits, while striking out four and walking two.
• Junior southpaw Jared Pettitte allowed two runs on two hits in 0.2 innings.

The Cougars travel to Arizona to face the Wildcats in a three-game series. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. CT against the Wildcats on Friday night.
