Sasser Named The American Freshman of the Week

HOUSTON – After leading the University of Houston Men's Basketball to a win over Cincinnati last weekend, guard Marcus Sasser was honored as the American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Week on Monday.
Sasser poured in a game-high 21 points to lead the Cougars to a 68-55 win over the Bearcats inside the Fertitta Center on Sunday afternoon. The Red Oak, Texas, native connected on 8-of-16 from the field with five 3-pointers for his second career 20-point game and tied his career high with six rebounds.
Houston built as much as a 15 point lead early in the second half, but the Bearcats chipped away and moved to within five points on two occasions.
In each case, Sasser halted the Cincinnati run with jumpers to rebuild the Cougars' lead. He scored 11 straight points for the Cougars midway through the second half on the way to 15 points in the final period.
It was the first weekly award of Sasser's career.
This season, Sasser leads the Cougars with 2.0 3-pointers per game and ranks seventh in the league with that total. He also stands among the conference leaders in 3-point field goal percentage (.375).
With Sunday's win, the Cougars remained in a tie for first with Tulsa atop the latest league standings with only two regular-season games remaining.
UConn guard Christian Vital was named the league's Player of the Week. UConn guard James Bouknight, Memphis forward Precious Achiuwa, USF guard Justin Brown, Tulsa guard Lawson Korita and Wichita State guard Dexter Dennis earned places on the Weekly Honor Roll.
