Cougars Drop 12-Inning Contest with UTRGV

Houston hosts Texas State in weekend series starting Friday
HOUSTON -- The University of Houston Baseball team fell to UTRGV, 6-5, in 12 innings on Tuesday night at Sanders Field at Schroeder Park.
With the decision, the Cougars fall to 2-5, while the Vaqueros improve to 3-5.
KEY INNINGS
2nd | Redshirt sophomore second baseman Ian McMillan gave Houston a 1-0 lead on a sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the second. He plated junior left fielder Brett Cain, who reached on an error, stole second base and advanced to third on a wild pitch.
6th | UTRGV tied things with an RBI single in the top of the sixth.
8th | The Vaqueros made it 5-1 with a grand slam in the eighth. In the bottom frame, the Cougars rallied for three runs. With two outs and the bases loaded, freshman Rey Mendoza hit a pinch-hit, two-RBI single. Senior center fielder Tyler Bielamowicz followed with a RBI single to get Houston knocking on the door at 5-4.
9th | Junior right fielder Steven Rivas sent the game to extra innings with a one-out, solo home run over the Sanders-Gutierrez Scoreboard in the bottom of the ninth.
12th | In the 12th, UTRGV retook the lead on a bases-loaded sac fly for the 6-5 final.
HOUSTON NOTES
Offense:
• Houston outhit the Vaqueros, 10-8.
• Rivas finished with a career-high three hits to pace the Cougars, going 3-for-6 with one RBI and two runs scored. He tied junior third baseman Ryan Hernandez, who doubled in a 1-for-4 showing and was hit twice by a pitch, for the team lead with his third home run of the season.
• Bielamowicz went 2-for-4 with a double, RBI, two walks and one stolen base.
• Junior designated hitter Bryson Hill, senior shortstop Kobe Hyland, Mendoza and freshman Luke Almendarez all singled, respectively. The base knocks for Mendoza and Almendarez marked the first of their careers.
Pitching:
• Junior right-handed pitcher Isaiah Blaylock (0-1) suffered the loss after 3.1 innings in relief, surrendering the game-winning run in the 12th.
• Redshirt junior Spencer Hynes tossed two scoreless innings in the start. After stranding two runners in the opening frame, Hynes struck out the side in the second. In total, he had a career-high five strikeouts.
• Junior southpaw Nick Rupp made his Houston debut starting the third inning. Rupp tossed three innings of one-hit ball, striking out three.
• Sophomore right-hander Tanner Green was taxed for one run in the sixth, but retired the side in the seventh.
• Junior Robert Gasser (0.2 innings) and senior Tristen Bayless (1.0 innings) gave up two runs apiece in the eighth. Bayless started the ninth before handing the ball off to Blaylock.
