Houston opens four-game homestand
HOUSTON -- The University of Houston Baseball program opens its midweek schedule hosting UTRGV on Tuesday at Sanders Field at Schroeder Park.
First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m. with gates opening at 4:30 p.m.
The matchup serves as Fat Tuesday at the ballpark. Mardi Gras beads will be given away to the first 200 fans. Gumbo will also be available at the concession stand.
General admission tickets are $2 as part of Houston's $2 Tuesday promotion for home games all season long.

SINGLES
• Houston enters its midweek opener with a 2-4 record.
• The Cougars went 1-2 against Youngstown State on Opening Weekend and 1-2 at the inaugural Round Rock Classic over the weekend.
• Houston defeated No. 25 Stanford, 11-4, in the tournament opener. After falling 8-4 to Tennessee on Saturday, Houston battled then No. 1 Texas Tech in a 3-2 loss in 10 innings in the finale on Sunday.
• After the game against the Red Raiders, junior Ryan Hernandez and senior Blake Way were named to the Round Rock Classic All-Tournament Team.
• Hernandez continues to pace Houston at the plate after two weeks. The corner infielder is batting .320 with a .760 slugging percentage. He leads the American Athletic Conference with three home runs and eight RBI.
• Redshirt junior Spencer Hynes makes his first start of the season and third midweek start of his career. On the season, he is 0-1 with a 27.00 ERA.
• The Cougars are tied for 31st in the country in home runs (7) and 45th in stolen bases (12).
• Houston is batting .189 as a team and has a 4.06 ERA, compared to opponents' .251 average and 4.34 ERA.
• On Feb. 3, the program announced it would pay tribute to the Altobelli family by wearing a decal "JKA ALTO" with each of their initials on their batting helmets throughout the 2020 season.
• Houston was picked second in The American 2020 Preseason Poll released on Dec. 30. The Cougars finished with 54 points and three first-place votes, second only to ECU, which garnered 62 points and six total votes.
• Houston returns 18 letterwinners and welcomes 17 newcomers to the fold on its 2020 squad. Of those, five offensive starters and two weekend starting pitchers are back from a season ago.
ON UTRGV
• The Vaqueros enter Tuesday with a 2-5 record.
• UTRGV split a four-game series against Kansas State to open the season, before being swept by then No. 24 Oklahoma State over the weekend.
• The Vaqueros were tabbed to tie for fourth in the WAC Preseason Poll.
• Graduate middle infielder Andy Atwood leads the team with a .370 batting average and .370 slugging percentage (.593) and three doubles.
• Redshirt junior right-handed pitcher is making his second start of the season. He is 0-1 with a 27.00 ERA.
• UTRGV is batting .237 as a team and has a 6.30 ERA, compared to opponents' .277 average and 3.69 ERA.
ON DECK
The Cougars conclude their homestand with a weekend series with Texas State starting Friday.
