Ryan Hernandez, Blake Way named to Round Rock Classic All-Tournament Team
ROUND ROCK, Texas -- The University of Houston Baseball team battled but ultimately fell to Texas Tech, 3-2, in 10 innings in the Round Rock Classic finale on Sunday night at Dell Diamond.
With the decision, the Cougars fall to 2-4 on the season, while the Red Raiders improve to 6-1. Texas Tech was ranked No. 1 in the country according to the NCBWA and Collegiate Baseball Polls.
After the game, junior third baseman Ryan Hernandez and senior left fielder Blake Way were named to the inaugural All-Tournament Team.
KEY INNINGS
1st | Senior center fielder Tyler Bielamowicz reached on a hit by pitch and stole second base and advanced to third on a wild pitch in the next at-bat to open the game. Sophomore second baseman Brad Burckel followed with a grounder the other way to bring Bielamowicz home for an early lead. However, the Red Raiders homered on the first pitch of the bottom frame to tie the game.
4th | Houston reclaimed the edge in the fourth inning. With two outs, senior shortstop Kobe Hyland doubled home senior left fielder Blake Way, who walked, with a liner into the right-center gap.
5th | Texas Tech got a leadoff triple and traded an out for a run to tie the game in the fifth.
10th | The Red Raiders hit a walk-off single through the right side of the infield to walk things off, 3-2, in the 10th.
HOUSTON NOTES
Offense:
• Six Cougars hit safely in the game.
• Burkel and Hyland each recorded RBI base hits in 1-for-2 showings.
• Junior right fielder Steven Rivas (1-for-5) and redshirt sophomore Ian McMillan (1-for-3) doubled. McMillan entered the game at second base in the bottom of the fourth inning.
• Senior first baseman Lael Lockhart Jr. and junior designated hitter Bryson Hill went 1-for-3, respectively.
Pitching:
• Senior left-handed pitcher Brayson Hurdsman (1-1) drew the hard-luck loss. Hurdsman came on in the seventh and held the Red Raiders scoreless for three innings before the walk-off single with two outs in the 10th. He walked one and struck out four.
• Redshirt junior southpaw Jared Pettitte bounced back from a leadoff home run to go 5.1 innings in a no-decision. In total, he scattered three hits and two runs with four walks to two strikeouts.
• Senior righty Carter Herny made his second appearance in as many days, relieving Pettitte. Henry went 1.1 scoreless before handing the ball to Hurdsman in the seventh.
ON DECK
The Cougars open their midweek schedule with a Tuesday tilt vs. UTRGV before hosting Texas State in a weekend series at Sanders Field at Schroeder Park.
