Cougars combine to surrender three hits in back-to-back shutouts
HOUSTON – Behind a pair of back-to-back shutouts, the University of Houston Softball team swept its doubleheader on Friday's opener of the Houston Challenge.
The back-to-back shutouts for the Cougars (9-4) mark their third and fourth of the season. Houston began the day with an 8-0, five-inning victory over Syracuse and followed it with a 4-0 win over Louisiana Tech.
Against the Orange (3-6), freshman pitcher Logan Hulon tossed the second shutout of her career, surrendering just one hit and striking out five batters in the process. In the nightcap, junior pitcher McKenna Fryar earned the victory over the Lady Techsters (2-8), allowing no walks and just two hits over her seven innings of work. Fryar finished the game retiring 15 of the final 16 batters she faced.
Offensively, the Cougars were led by senior infielder Sarah Queen, combining to go 6-for-8 with five RBIs in both games. She drove in a career-high four RBIs against Syracuse. That same game saw graduate transfer infielder Becca Schulte drive in three runs of her own, courtesy of her first home run of the season.

KEY INNINGS
2nd | After sophomore catcher Kati Ray Brown and junior designated player Charese Wyatt both reached base, Queen stepped up to the plate with two outs and tripled both of them home to push the Houston lead to three.
4th | With senior infielder Kelli Montgomery and sophomore outfielder Abby Odneal on base, Schulte launched a 1-2 pitch over the left field wall to break the game open and give the Cougars a seven-run advantage.
5th | Queen cemented the walk-off, run-rule victory for Houston, as her double in the gap scored Wyatt all the way from first, giving the Cougars the 8-0 win.
