Cougars tip off vs. Tigers at 1 p.m., Saturday, inside FedExForum
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – In the first battle of the preseason favorites this season, the University of Houston Men's Basketball program meets Memphis at 1 p.m., Saturday, inside FedExForum.
Both teams earned 113 points to finish in a tie atop the American Athletic Conference Coaches' Preseason Poll in October. The two schools wrap up the regular season inside the Fertitta Center at 11 a.m., Sunday, March 8.
The 22nd-ranked Cougars enter this weekend's game following an impressive 76-43 win over Tulsa on Wednesday night inside the Fertitta Center. One game after freshman guard Marcus Sasser scored a career-high 26 points in an overtime loss at SMU, redshirt freshman guard Caleb Mills set his personal best with 27 points to lead the Cougars over the Golden Hurricane.
Mills scored 22 of his points in the second half, including each of Houston's first 19 to begin the final period.
With his point total, Mills holds the team lead with 12.9 points per game. His scoring average ranks fourth in Houston freshman single-season history. The Arden, N.C., native needs only eight points to move past Hall of Famer Clyde Drexler into seventh among the Houston freshman single-season scoring leaders.
Sophomore guard Nate Hinton scored 15 points against Tulsa – thanks to a Fertitta Center-record 10-of-10 performance from the free throw line – and grabbed six rebounds. The Gastonia, N.C, native leads the Cougars and ranks fourth in The American with 8.9 rebounds per game.
As he begins the homestretch of his final collegiate season, senior center Chris Harris Jr. leads the Cougars and ranks second in the league with 2.1 blocks per game. The Houston native and Madison High School product is also tied for fifth in The American with 2.7 offensive rebounds per game.
