Julia Blackshell-Fair leads Houston with 23 points and seven rebounds
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Women's Basketball battled for the entirety of the game in a 74-65 loss to Cincinnati on Tuesday night at the Fertitta Center.
BOX SCORE
Twenty-three points and seven rebounds from junior guard Julia Blackshell-Fair would not be enough as the Cougars (12-15, 5-8 American) fell to the Bearcats (17-8, 8-4 American). Bria Patterson led the Cougars on the boards with a career-high 10 rebounds, as Dorian Branch posted a team-high five assists.
After getting out to an early 6-0 start, the Cougar offense came up short in the closing minutes against the Bearcats. Blackshell-Fair paced the Cougars for the second straight time this season matching her career-high in scoring with 23 points, including 12 in the first half. Efficiency paid off for the Bearcats as they shot over 50 percent from the field in three of the four quarters, including a game-high 64.3 percent in the fourth.
UH changed the face of the game, opening the third frame with a 6-0 run capped off by Dymond Gladney sinking a three-pointer to get the Cougars within one-point, followed by a Blackshell-Fair lay-up that gave the Cougars a one-point advantage with 8:46 left in the quarter. Houston kept things close by turning the Bearcats over 23 times, including seven times in the final five minutes of regulation.
Bearcat forward IImar'I Thomas led Cincinnati with a 20-point, 10-rebound double-double.
The Cougars will return to action when the squad visits SMU on Saturday for a 2 p.m. matchup with the Mustangs.
