HUMBLE, Texas – For the third straight day, University of Houston junior Andrew Gibson recorded a sub-par round to earn a career-best finish following the Final Round of the All-American Intercollegiate at Golf Club of Houston on Tuesday afternoon.
Gibson fired a 1-under 71 on the 7,067-yard, par-72 course to finish the three-day tournament at 5-under 211. He topped his previous best finish of 12th at the Trinity Forest Invitational on Sept. 22-24, 2019.
The Perthshire, Scotland, native began his day off No. 10 and stood at +4 through 12 after a double bogey on No. 2 and a bogey on No. 3.
Fortunately, Gibson rallied impressively to play the final six holes at -5. He started the rally with a birdie on No. 4 and followed that with another birdie on the 450-yard, par-4 sixth hole. After a par on No. 7, Gibson returned to even par for the day with an eagle on the 560-yard, par-5 eighth hole and capped the tournament with a birdie on No. 9.
As a team, the Cougars posted their low round of the tournament with a 278 and tied for fifth with UTSA at even-par 864
Sam Houston State swept the team and individual titles. The Bearkats finished with a score of 840 to finish four strokes ahead of No. 8 Wake Forest, while Jack Randle earned medalist honors at 11-under 205, thanks to a Final Round 66.
Rice (852) and Louisiana (862) finished third and fourth, respectively, with the Cougars tying with UTSA. No. 30 South Carolina (868), Louisiana Tech (871), ULM (874) and Lamar (879) rounded out the Top 10.
Luis Carrera finished second on the individual leaderboard at 208, while No. 90 Noah Steele (Sam Houston State) and No. 54 Alex Fitzpatrick (Wake Forest) tied for third at 209.
Sophomore Braxton Watkins, junior Luke Long and junior Laurence Crea each tie for 10th at 212. Long overcame a his lone bogey of the day on No. 6 with a bogey on No. 8 and two birdies in his first three holes to start his back nine.
Watkins lowered his score for the third straight day with a strong finish. Standing at even par through 12 holes, the Winthrop, Ark., native drained three straight birdies and overcame a bogey on No. 17 with a birdie on the final hole for a Final-Round 69.
Crea sank three birdies in his round on the way to a 71 Tuesday.
Senior Matt Cole tied for 19th at 215, while senior Logan Young tied for 30th at 218. Junior Alexander Frances tied for 36th at 220, while senior George Gardner tied for 45th at 220, thanks to a 70 on Tuesday.
Making his collegiate debut, freshman Austyn Reily tied for 54th at 224 with a career-low 70 in the Final Round. Senior Zach Tracy tied for 62nd at 226, while senior Alex Isakson tied for 75th at 234.
UP NEXT
Following the All-American Intercollegiate, the Cougars will play host to the Border Olympics at Max Mandel Golf Course in Laredo, Texas, on Feb. 24-25. Fans should note that that locations was recently changed from Laredo Country Club due to course renovations.
From there, the Cougars will host the Cabo Collegiate (March 1-3) and Valspar Collegiate Invitational (March 16-17).
