
Cougars Fall to Youngstown State in 11 Innings

Tristen Bayless records career-high eight strikeouts out of bullpen
HOUSTON -- The University of Houston Baseball team dropped its first contest of the season in a 6-3, 11-inning loss to Youngstown State on Saturday night at Sanders Field at Schroeder Park.
With the decision, the Cougars, who are ranked No. 35 by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, and Penguins even their series and overall records at one game apiece.
KEY INNINGS
2nd | Senior right fielder Blake Way recorded Houston's first home run of the season with a solo blast to left field with two outs in the bottom of the second.
6th | After an error extended the inning, YSU plated three unearned runs to take the lead in the sixth.
7th | In the bottom of the seventh, junior first baseman Ryan Hernandez brought the Cougars back within one run, depositing the first pitch of the frame over the wall in left center.
8th | Senior shortstop Kobe Hyland tied the game at 3-3 with a solo home run of his own to right center in the eighth.
11th | The long-ball action unfortunately shifted to the Penguins in the 11th for a three-run homer for the 6-3 final.
HOUSTON NOTES
Offense:
• The home runs from Way, Hernandez and Hyland accounted for all three of Houston's hits on the night.
• Senior designated hitter Lael Lockhart Jr. and freshman catcher Dylan Post, who made his career debut as a defensive replacement in ninth, got on via hit by pitch and walk, respectively.
Pitching:
• Senior right-handed pitcher Carter Henry (0-1) suffered the loss, surrendering a three-run home run in the 11th.
• Junior starter Clay Aguilar worked around six hits and three unearned runs in a no-decision in the start. He walked one and struck out five over 5.2 innings.
• Senior southpaw Tristen Bayless recorded a career outing out of the bullpen. Called on for the final out of the sixth, Bayless fanned eight batters over 4.1 innings, both career marks.
• Junior righty Isaiah Blaylock made his UH debut, punching out two Penguins in the 11th.
ON DECK
The Cougars will go for the series win in a noon rubber game Sunday. Gates open at 10 a.m.
