Cougars Drop Finale to Youngstown State in Extras

Ryan Hernandez, Steven Rivas each hit multi-run home runs
HOUSTON -- The University of Houston Baseball team fell to Youngstown State, 8-6, in 10 innings on Sunday afternoon at Sanders Field at Schroeder Park.
With the decision, the Cougars drop the series to the Penguins and fall to 1-2 on the season.
KEY INNINGS
1st | For the second straight game, a home run opened the scoring. In the bottom of the first inning, senior first baseman Ryan Hernandez belted a two-run home run to left field. Senior center fielder Tyler Bielamowicz, who walked one batter earlier and stole second base, scored on the play.
2nd | YSU answered with a home run in its next trip to the plate to make it 2-1 in the top of the second.
3rd | The Cougars recorded a four-run third. Sophomore second baseman Brad Burckel opened the bottom frame with a single and stole second base. After a walk and fielder's choice put runners at the corners, senior designated hitter Lael Lockhart Jr. delivered Buckel with a squeeze bunt. Later with two outs, senior right fielder Steven Rivas hit a three-run homer to right field for a 6-1 lead.
5th | The Penguins made it 6-2 with a RBI single in the fifth.
9th | YSU got a three-run and solo home run in the top of the ninth to extend the game.
10th | The Penguins scored two runs on a bases-loaded single in the 10th to take the series.
HOUSTON NOTES
Offense:
• Hernandez's two-run home run marked his second long ball of the season and came in a 1-for-5 performance.
• Rivas' three-run shot was the first homer of his career. He also finished 1-for-5.
• Burckel and redshirt sophomore third baseman Ian McMillan each singled, respectively.
• Redshirt sophomore Bryson Hill hit a pinch-hit single in the 10th.
Pitching:
• Redshirt junior left-handed pitcher Spencer Hynes (0-1) was taxed for three runs across the ninth and 10th innings for the loss.
• Fellow redshirt junior southpaw Jared Pettitte lasted into the fifth in the start. Issuing two runs, he walked three and tied his career high with four strikeouts over a career-long 4.1 innings.
• Sophomore Tanner Green gave up three runs on four hits over a career-long 3.1 innings. He walked none and fanned a career-high three batters.
• Junior righty Isaiah Blaylock came on in the 10th and got all three outs in the frame. The appearance was his second out of the bullpen in as many days.
ON DECK
The Cougars will take part in the inaugural Round Rock Classic across Feb. 21-23. Hosted at Dell Diamond, home of the Astros' Triple-A affiliate Round Rock Express, the Houston will face Stanford, Tennessee and Texas Tech in a round-robin format.
