
Houston Opens Conference Play Against Memphis

Cougars have won last three meetings against the Tigers
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Women's Basketball team returns to action on Dec. 22 against Memphis to open its conference slate.
Tip-off is slated for noon on ESPN+ at Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
THE 4-1-1
Houston opens up its American Athletic Conference campaign with a trip to Memphis on Dec. 22. The Cougars are led in scoring by Britney Onyeje who averages 16.7 points per game. Tatyana Hill leads UH on the glass, pulling down 6.3 rebounds per game. Julia Blackshell-Fair is the assists leader for the Cougars with 20 this season.
Houston is averaging 73.8 points per game on 39.4 percent shooting from the field and a 32.1 percent mark from beyond the 3-point line. The Cougars allow 73.3 points on defense while letting opponents shoot 39.7 percent and 19.4 percent from the field and beyond the arc, respectively.
Under Coach Hughey, Houston has been one of the most active defensive teams in the country over the past two seasons. The Cougars enter the game with 35 steals this season and 13 blocks, forcing 18.25 turnovers per game.
SCOUTING THE TIGERS
Memphis is in its 12th season under Head Coach Melissa McFerrin. The Tigers are 2-4 this season and have dropped their last two contests, most recently falling to Alabama in a 68-74 decision. Memphis is led in scoring by Dulcy Fankam Mendjiadeu who is one of two Memphis players averaging at least 10.0 points per game. She averages 12.7 rebounds per game to lead the team in the category. Aerial Wilson is the assist leader for Memphis with 37 assists this season.
Memphis averages 65.5 points per game on 38.6 percent shooting from the field, including a 26.8 percent mark from the three-point line.
THE SERIES
Tuesday's meeting is the 35th meeting between the two teams. Memphis leads the series 16-19. Houston has won the last three meetings.
BOMBS AWAY
Houston has proven itself to be a threat from behind the three-point line, racking up at least six made three's in every game this season.
Onyeje ranks first in The American and fifth nationally in made three-pointers this season.
BALL CONTROL
The Cougars recorded 100 possessions against OU, committed just 12 turnovers. The UH guards rank among the best in the nation in assist-turnover ratio at 1.07, which is 72nd nationally.
The team ranked 89th nationally and second in the league in turnovers per game with only 14.7.
H-TOWN LOCKDOWN DEFENSE
The Cougars have shown that they are not afraid to shoot three-pointers and on the flipside they are one of the best at defending the three-point shot. UH ranks third in the lead and 17th nationally in three-point FG defense, holding opponents to 19.4 percent from long-range.
SCOOP 'N SCORE
Houston forced 21 Oklahoma turnovers, its most since Feb. 18, 2020 when the team forced 23 against Cincinnati. This season UH has earned 35 steals and is 109th nationally in the category.
DEEPER THAN EVER
With is largest roster in recent years, Houston has more than enough options off the bench. The Houston reserves have done their part, accounting for 105 points this season.
HOUSTON IN CONFERENCE OPENERS
Houston is 3-3 under Hughey in conference-openers.
SAFE AT HOME
Houston posted a 9-5 record inside the Fertitta Center during the 2019-20 season.
ON THE OFFENSIVE
Houston is second in The American in scoring offense this season, averaging 78.0 points per contest, only behind USF.
