Houston Holds Off Memphis in Conference Opener

Cougars off to best start since 2010-11 with third straight win
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Women's Basketball team held off a late rally, knocking off Memphis (2-5, 0-2 American) in a 75-63 decision on Tuesday afternoon at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
Houston (4-1, 1-0 American) had three players post double-digit scoring efforts, led by Eryka Sidney with 18 points. Bria Patterson added 16 points, one point shy of her career-high, as Ca' Leyah Burrell contributed 12 points. Sidney led the Cougars in assists with seven, as Patterson notched six rebounds.
The Cougars passed the ball well, racking up a season-high 20 assists. Defensively, Houston was unstoppable as they forced a season-high 30 turnovers.
Memphis had the upper hand early, shooting 45.5 percent from the field in the first quarter. Daphane White got things going for the Cougars in the paint, scoring the first two Cougar baskets of the game. A couple of early Memphis three-pointers and a series of Houston turnovers gave Memphis a 17-13 edge at the end of the first quarter.
The tables turned in the second quarter when Houston got the hot hand, shooting 55.0 from the field. Ca'Leyah Burrell and Julia Blackshell-Fair combined for 12 of the Cougars 24 points in the frame, as Blackshell-Fair went a perfect 3-of-3 from the field. On the defensive side of the ball, Houston stifled the Tigers. UH turned Memphis over 10 times and racking up four steals, led by Burrell with two. At the half time break the Cougars took a 37-27 lead into the locker room.
Houston kept up the pressure in the third quarter, scoring 16 of its 26 points off turnovers. The Cougars got going from long-range, knocking down four three-pointers in the frame. Patterson ignited the Cougar offense scoring eight of her 16 points in the third quarter, including two of her four three-pointers. Houston saw its lead expand to 23 points, ultimately heading into the fourth quarter with a 63-40 lead.
Memphis found a rhythm in the fourth quarter, going on a 15-2 run and getting within 10 points before late game heroics and strong free-throw shooting sealed the game for Houston. The Cougars were 4-of-6 from the free-throw line in the final five minutes, earning their third straight win.
