No. 17/18 Cougars meet Broncos at 2 p.m., in Fertitta Center in first meeting in Houston
HOUSTON – After a big season-opening win, the University of Houston Men's Basketball program returns to action when it meets Boise State at 2 p.m., Friday, inside the Fertitta Center in the first game of the Southwest Showcase.
No. 17/18 Houston enters the game following am 89-45 victory over Lamar on Wednesday afternoon. Sophomore guard Marcus Sasser drained a Fertitta Center-record seven 3-pointers on the way to 25 points to lead the Cougars.
In addition Sasser tied the UH single-game record for 3-point field goal percentage (.778) and set the Fertitta Center record for overall field goal percentage (.818).
Sasser wasn't the only Cougar to shine against the Cardinals. Freshman guard Tramon Mark added 22 points with a game-high-tying eight rebounds in his collegiate debut. It was the third-highest points total for a true Houston freshman and the most points scored in a debut since Lamar Roberson finished with 25 points against Florida Tech to start the 2005-06 season.
Friday's game is part of a busy stretch for the Cougars, who will play three games on the first five days of the season. Following Friday's game, Houston hits the road to meet No. 14/13 Texas Tech at 4:30 p.m., Sunday, inside Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas, for the final game of the Southwest Showcase.
With Friday's win, senior forward/center Brison Gresham became the first Cougar to compete in 30 wins inside the Fertitta Center. The New Orleans native broke out of a tie with guard Nate Hinton (2018-20) and senior forward Fabian White Jr., who is sitting out the 2020-21 season as a redshirt after suffering a knee injury in the offseason.
