Cougars improve to 16-4, 6-1 in American Athletic Conference play
HOUSTON – University of Houston junior point guard DeJon Jarreau posted game highs with 12 points and six assists and grabbed four rebounds to lead the Cougars to a 68-49 win over USF inside the Fertitta Center on Sunday afternoon.
Jarreau led the Cougars in assists for the 12th time this season while committing only one turnover in more than 24 minutes of action. The New Orleans native drained 6-of-7 free throws to lead the Cougars to their 14th win in the last 16 games.
With the win, Houston improved to 16-4 and remained tied with Tulsa atop the American Athletic Conference standings with a 6-1 league mark. USF fell to 8-12 overall and 1-6 in American play.
The Cougars jumped ahead early before USF rallied to take a 16-14 lead on Laquincy Rideau's jumper in the paint with 8:55 remaining.
Fortunately, sophomore point guard Quentin Grimes buried a 3-pointer on the Cougars' next possession to ignite a 10-1 run over the next 5:25 to give Houston the lead for good.
USF would move no closer than six points for the rest of the way with Houston building as much as a 22-point lead late in the game.
For the 20th straight game, the Cougars outrebounded their opponent, 37-32 against the Bulls, with 14 offensive boards. Houston also connected on 81.3 percent (13-of-16) from the free throw line.
Junior forward Fabian White Jr. scored 11 points with three rebounds, while redshirt freshman guard Caleb Mills added 11 points with three boards.
Michael Durr and Antun Maricevic led USF with eight points apiece, while David Collins and Madut Akec were tops with four rebounds each.
