Houston Prevails in Thriller Over Wichita State

Late surge earns Cougars their second straight home victory
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Women's Basketball team surged when it counted the most, in an 64-56 overtime victory over Wichita State on Saturday afternoon at the Fertitta Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams got out to strong starts offensively, but strong play underneath would give Houston a slight edge in the opening minutes of play. Julia Blackshell-Fair made her presence known as a facilitator early, with three first quarter assists. Tatyana Hill and Maya Jones combined for eight of the Cougars 18 first quarter points as the squad outscored WSU 12-10 in the paint and 18-16 overall heading into the break.
Wichita State would take the upper hand in the second frame, shooting 58.3 and outscoring Houston 12-6 in the paint. The Cougars defense kept things close, forcing 10 turnover and picking up four steals as WSU headed into the break leading 30-28.
Freshman forward Jazmaine Lewis became a focal point for the Cougar offense in the third quarter, accounting for a team-high four points. Houston continued to pressure the Shockers, forcing eight turnovers and owning the glass 15-7. With 10 minutes remaining in regulation WSU held a 44-39 advantage.
The Cougars made key plays down the stretch that would ultimately decide the game. With a minute and a half remaining Hill changed the momentum of the game, drawing an offensive foul that gave Houston possession. On the other end Bria Patterson sank a lay-up to make it a one-point game. WSU's Seraphine Bastin drew a foul and hit 1-of-2 from the line with 27 seconds remaining. As time winded down, Gladney found Lewis on the block for a two-point basket that sent the game into overtime. Houston made use of the opportunities that it was given outscoring the Shockers 7-2 off turnovers, 8-4 in the paint and 7-4 off the fast break in the fourth quarter.
With the score tied 53-53, Houston rattled off eight consecutive points to build a comfortable lead. A driving lay-up from Gladney and a three-pointer from Dorian Branch sealed the deal and helped Houston improve to 10-10 on the season and 3-3 in conference play as they defeated Wichita State 64-56.
