HOUSTON – After leading his program to a record-setting season, University of Houston Head Coach Kelvin Sampson was honored Tuesday night as the Coach of the Year at the Houston Sport Awards presented by Insperity.
In 2018-19, Sampson guided the Cougars to a 33-4, the American Athletic Conference regular-season championship, Top-12 rankings in both final national polls and the program's first berth in the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 since 1984.
His Cougars set a school-single-season record with 33 wins, becoming only the fourth 30-win team in Houston history.

He became only the 52nd coach in NCAA history (with 10+ years at Division I level) to reach 600 wins and set a Houston record with his 100th win in only his 149th game.
For his impressive efforts, he was recognized as the Clarence "Big House" Gaines National Coach of he Year and was named the American Athletic Conference Coach of the Year and the NABC District 25 Coach of the Year for the second straight season.
This season, Sampson has led the Cougars to a 14-4 overall record and a 4-1 record in American Athletic Conference following a 65-54 win at No. 16/16 Wichita State on Saturday. With that win, the Cougars entered the Top 25 in both national polls.
Sampson was recognized during a ceremony at the Hilton Americas. He was joined by nominees Tina Langley (Rice Women's Basketball), Bill O'Brien (Houston Texans) and A.J. Hinch (Houston Astros).

Guard Corey Davis was among the nominees for College Athlete of the Year, which was presented to Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts. Nicole Lennon (Rice Volleyball) and Eric Ogwumike (Rice Women's Basketball) were also nominees.
