HOUSTON – University of Houston head coach Dana Holgorsen announced on Friday the promotion of Mark Scott as the Cougars' special teams coordinator. Scott served as a special teams analyst at UH during the 2019 season.
Scott returns to an on-field role after spending two seasons an assistant coach at West Virginia, where he worked with the linebackers and special teams units. During his first season at Houston, Scott was a part of a unit that led the country in special teams efficiency and ranked No. 2 in net punting average.
He also helped implement Houston's punting scheme that allowed Dane Roy to be named a 2019 Ray Guy Award finalist. Roy was also named The American Athletic Conference's Co-Special Teams Player of the Year.
The Cougars' special teams units led the nation in blocked punts (five) and blocked kicks (six), while returning a pair of kickoffs and punts for touchdowns last season. Houston was the only team in FBS to have multiple kickoff and punt returns for touchdowns in 2019.
Scott spent seven seasons at West Virginia from 2012-18 and coached a pair of All-Americans in David Long (2017, 2018) and Isaiah Bruce (2013). He began his tenure as a graduate assistant from 2012-14. He also worked with five all-Big 12 selections during his time in Morgantown.
Scott is a graduate of Hillsdale College, where he was a four-year letterman and three-year starter at outside linebacker. He began his coaching career at Hillsdale in 2007, before working three seasons at Division-II University of Indianapolis as a quality control assistant coach (2008-10). Scott also spent the 2011 season as the special teams coordinator and outside linebacker coach at Division-III Trine University.
