Cougars start conference play 2-0 for first time since 2013
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Volleyball team used another five-set thriller to come back and take down Memphis by a score of 3-2 (15-25, 25-23, 22-25, 25-16, 17-15) on Sunday afternoon inside the Fertitta Center.
With the victory, the Cougars (8-9, 2-0 American) start conference play 2-0 for the first time since 2013. The win over the Tigers (11-3, 0-2 American) also marks Houston's third consecutive match that has gone the distance, all resulting in comeback wins for the Cougars.
Senior outside hitter Megan Duncan led the charge for Houston on Sunday, tying her career-high with a match-high 25 kills. Her afternoon was rounded out with 11 digs, marking her second double-double of the season and 19th in her career.
Senior libero Katie and junior setter Abby Irvine rounded out those with double-digit digs for the Cougars. Karbo finished the contest with 26 digs, while Irvine's 13 digs were complemented by 35 assists to earn her ninth double-double of the 2019 campaign.
Houston 3, Memphis 2
Set 1
A slow start from Houston resulted in the Cougars calling a timeout trailing 11-5. After the Tigers scored four of the next five points, Memphis held a 15-6 lead, which was enough of a cushion for the Tigers to win the set 25-15.
Set 2
Once Duncan tied the score at four with a kill, Houston went on a 6-2 run to take a four-point lead and force Memphis to call a timeout. When the Tigers came back and took a one-point advantage, the Cougars put together a rebuttal of their own and scored five of the next six points to reclaim a 19-15 lead. Memphis tried to make another comeback, as they tied the score at 22, but Houston recovered and won the set 25-23 and tied the match at one.
Set 3
Coming out of the intermission, the two teams found themselves in a seesaw battle throughout the entire set. After Memphis built itself a four-point lead, Houston trimmed the deficit down to a pair at 18-20, but the deficit proved to be too much to overcome, as the Tigers went on to win the set 25-22.
Set 4
Freshman middle blocker Rachel Tullos helped get the Cougars going to start the fourth, as one of her three kills in the match put Houston ahead 9-7. As Houston slowly stretched its lead to five, Memphis was forced to call a timeout at 18-13, but it wouldn't be enough to stop the Cougars' momentum, as Houston cruised to the 25-16 victory to force the decisive fifth frame.
Set 5
Houston came out fast and quickly grabbed an early two-point advantage, but Memphis responded with a run of its own and scored six of the following eight points to hold an 8-6 lead. After the Cougars clawed their way back and narrowed the deficit to one, the two teams traded leads until Houston was able to pull away with 17-15 victory that was cemented by a block from Duncan and sophomore middle blocker Isabel Theut.
