SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of Houston Men's Golf program forced a playoff for the Lone Star Invitational team championship but fell just short on Tuesday afternoon at TPC San Antonio.
The Cougars tied with South Alabama and UT Arlington at 873 after 54 holes to set up the playoff. With the top-four low scores counting for each team, USA claimed the team championship at 2-under, followed by Houston (1-under) and UT Arlington (E) on the first playoff hole.
Senior Logan Young posted a score of even-par 216 to finish sixth. He finished with a score of 74 on Tuesday to lead Houston in its 2019-20 opening tournament on the 7,435-yard, par-72 AT&T Oaks Course.
Competing in his first tournament with the Cougars after sitting out a year ago as a redshirt, junior Luke Long overcame a tough start to finish with a 71 for the team's second-lowest round of the day. Starting off No. 2, Long bogeyed each of his first three holes but did not endure another one for the rest of the day.
After five straight pars, he began a birdie barrage on his back nine, starting on the par-4 10th hole. He drained back-to-back birdies on Nos. 13-14 and added his fourth and final birdie of the day on the 347-yard, par-4 17th hole.
Long tied for seventh with a score of 217.
Senior Matt Cole also made his debut in the Scarlet & White a memorable one. A transfer after graduating from Arkansas State, Cole tied for 10th at 219.
Competing as an individual, junior Andrew Gibson enjoyed the team's low round of the day with a 70. The Perthshire, Scotland, native did not endure a bogey throughout the day and sank birdies on No. 14 and No. 2 to surge into a tie for 12th at 220.
Senior George Gardner tied for 20th at 223, while junior Alexander Frances tied for 34th at 228. Sophomore Braxton Watkins finished 31st at 226.
Lipscomb's Nolan Ray earned medalist honors at 9-under 207 to finish one stroke ahead of ULM's Guillaume Fanonnel.
