SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Posting a score of 577, the University of Houston Men's Golf program was tied for the first-day lead at the Lone Star Invitational on Monday evening.
Playing 36 holes, the Cougars were tied with UT Arlington on the 7,435-yard, par-72 AT&T Oaks Course at TPC San Antonio. South Alabama (579), Lipscomb (584) and ULM (587) rounded out the Top-Five leaders.
Senior Logan Young led the Cougars in the team's first tournament of the fall season with a score of 2-under 142 to tie for sixth. The Normangee, Texas, native opened the tournament with a bogey-free 69 in the First Round.
Young started the day off No. 3 and wasted no time in moving into red numbers, draining a birdie on the 481-yard, par-4 fourth hole. After three straight pars, Young made birdie on No. 8 and added his third and final birdie of the round on the par-5 14th hole.
He was one of four Cougars to finish the first day among the tournament's Top-13 leaders.
Competing in his first season at Houston after transferring from Arkansas State, senior Matt Cole was tied for 11th at 145. Senior George Gardner and junior Luke Long – who sat out as a redshirt with the Cougars a year ago – were tied for 15th at 146.
Junior Alexander Frances and junior Andrew Gibson – competing as an individual – were tied for 28th at 150, while sophomore Braxton Watkins was tied for 36th at 151.
Frances rebounded from a challenging First Round shoot 1-under 71s in the Second Round for the team's low round of the afternoon.
Lipscomb's Nolan Ray stood atop the individual leaderboard at 9-under 135. UT Arlington's Paul Gonzalez finished the first day at 136, while ULM's Guillaume Fanonnel was in third at 138.
The tournament concludes with the final 18 holes, starting with an 8:30 a.m., shotgun start Tuesday.
