Erien Watson, LaSondra Barrett join support staff
HOUSTON – The Houston Women's Basketball program has added Erien Watson and LaSondra Barrett to the staff, Head Coach Ronald Hughey announced Thursday.
Watson joins the staff as Associate Director of Basketball Operation, while Barrett joins the Cougars as Director of Recruiting Operations.
In her role, Watson will handle various duties such as recruiting travel, marketing, donor relations, budgeting and alumni relations. Most recently, Watson served as Program Manager for the Western Kentucky Men's Basketball team. Watson spent the 2015-16 year at Tulane as a Program Coordinator at Tulane after a stint at Delgado Community College as an Academic Advisor and Site Testing Coordinator.
Watson graduated from Mississippi State in 2009 and received a master's in sports administration from Georgia State in 2014. The native of Shreveport, La., interned with both the Atlanta Hawks and the Atlanta Dream while completing her master's degree.
"I want to thank Coach Hughey for the opportunity to be a part of his staff," says Watson. "I am super excited about this opportunity to work with such a great coaching staff and group of student-athletes here at the University of Houston. My goal has also been to be a part of a major DI program like the Women's Basketball team here at the University of Houston, so this is a dream come true for me.
"I look forward to getting to know the community as they come out and support the team. I have been welcomed into Cougar Nation with open arms and look forward to what I can add to make this program even more of a success in the near future."
In her role, Barrett will be responsible for overseeing recruiting operations, scouting and film analysis for both Houston and its opponents, along with graphic design. Barrett joins the Houston Women's Basketball staff after spending the 2018-19 season as Assistant Coach at Louisiana Tech where she primarily worked with guards and small forwards. Along with her coaching duties, Barrett oversaw recruiting, served as the team's academic liaison and created scouting reports for all of Louisiana Tech's 2018-19 opponents.
Prior to her time at Louisiana Tech, Barrett spent two seasons at LSU as Director of Player Development, where she was responsible for non-conference scheduling, academic relations and alumni relations.
During the 2016-17 season, Barrett spent time as Assistant Coach at Florida International after concluding a three-year stint as a Graduate Assistant at LSU.
A four-year letterwinner, Barrett concluded a highly decorated collegiate career at LSU in 2012 where she was a two-time First-Team All-SEC selection and 2009 Co-Freshman of the Year. She earned WBCA Honorable Mention All-America honors as a junior and senior. She concluded her collegiate career as one of only two players in program history to notch 1,500 points, 200 assists, 800 rebounds and 100 steals.
Upon the conclusion of her collegiate career, Barrett was selected 10th overall by the Washington Mystics in the 2012 WNBA Draft. Barrett spent time playing in Israel and Australia before turning her attention to coaching.
"I'm truly honored and excited about this opportunity to join Coach Hughey's staff," says Barrett. "The University of Houston's Women's Basketball program is special because of the quality of its staff, along with being intentional in the overall development of student-athletes on and off the court. I look forward to working with such an incredible head coach and experienced coaching staff while aiding in the continued success of the women's basketball program."
