Houston to Take On Sam Houston State, Rice Opening Weekend

Cougars face in-state opponents to open 2019-20 season
HOUSTON – The Cougars will open their third season under Head Coach Diego Bocanegra when they travel to Huntsville, Texas to take on Sam Houston State on Aug. 22 at 6:30 p.m., followed by a quick trip across town to face Rice on Aug. 25 at 7 p.m.
SCOUTING THE BEARKATS
- Sam Houston State is entering its 12th season under Head Coach Tom Brown.
- The Bearkats closed out their 2018 slate with a 3-12-3 overall record, including a 2-7-2 finish in Southland Conference play.
- Sam Houston State returns 12 letterwinners, and welcomes 11 newcomers to its 2019-20 squad.
SCOUTING THE OWLS
- Rice is entering its first season under Head Coach Brian Lee.
- The Owls finished out their 2018 season with a 7-9-1 overall record, including a 5-4-1 finish in Conference USA play, tying sixth place among 14 teams.
- Rice returns 17 letterwinners, including seven starters, and welcomes eight newcomers to the 2019-20 team.
2019-20 TEAM CAPTAINS
Houston Soccer is pleased to announce that Mia Brascia, Lauren Flowers and Amy Nguyen have been named team captains for the 2019-20 season.
Bocanegra on team captains:
"I am excited to announce Mia, Lauren and Amy as our Tri-Captains for the 2019-20 season. Over the course of the last eight months, they have emerged as the leaders of our team. Although they each have their own style of leadership, they all exemplify our core values and set great examples for everyone else. Most importantly, they put the success of the team ahead of everything else."
Brascia on selection:
"It's a humbling position to be put in. This is a special program and I am so privileged to be apart of this team. Together we're ready to tackle the American Conference for the city of Houston and our school."
Flowers on selection:
"Being named a captain this year has been a huge blessing for me. I'm excited for this season and ready for the responsibilities needed to lead such a great group of girls."
Nguyen on selection:
"I am honored to be thought of as a leader on this team. I am excited and confident in our ability to defy expectations in conference play this season. I hope to push my teammates to be their best on and off the field."
UP NEXT
Houston will return to the Carl Lewis Complex for its home opener on Aug. 30 when it takes on UIW.
