Cougars learn complete bracket of tournament, which airs on ESPN family of networks
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Men's Basketball program will face Portland at 2 p.m. (CT), Dec. 22, on ESPNU to open the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic inside the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu.
ESPN Events revealed the complete tournament bracket and matchups Thursday. The tournament features the Cougars, Portland, Georgia Tech, Boise State, UTEP, Washington, Ball State and host Hawai'i with 12 games played over three days.
Houston owns a 4-0 lead in the all-time series against Portland. However, the meeting in Hawai'i will be the first time the Cougars have faced the Pilots since an 88-63 win on Dec. 21, 1984, in the Kettle Classic inside the former Hofheinz Pavilion in Houston.
Following the game against Portland, the Cougars meet Georgia Tech or Boise State on Dec. 23, depending on the First-Round results. Houston closes out its stay in the Aloha State on Christmas against UTEP, Washington, Ball State or Hawai'i contingent on the previous results.
TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE
This is the latest addition to the Cougars' non-conference schedule. Earlier this week, the Cougars announced they will face South Carolina on Dec. 8 in Columbia, S.C., as part of the American Athletic Conference's non-conference scheduling alliance with the Southeastern Conference.
In The American play, the Cougars recently learned they will face Cincinnati, Memphis, SMU, Tulsa, UConn, USF and Wichita State in home-and-away games. Houston will meet Tulane and UCF in home games inside the Fertitta Center only while squaring off at ECU and at Temple in road games only.
The team's non-conference schedule will be announced soon with game times and broadcasting networks all coming at a later date.
