Houston Announces 2019 Schedule

Cougars set for inaugural year in Fertitta Center
HOUSTON – Highlighted by 14 regular-season matches and the 10th annual Flo Hyman Collegiate Cup inside the $60-million Fertitta Center, the University of Houston Volleyball program and first-year Head Coach David Rehr announced the 2019 schedule on Friday.

The 31-match slate features four matches with opponents that appeared in the 2018 NCAA Tournament as well as seven matches against teams that surpassed the 20-win mark a year ago. Houston will also face 13 teams that cracked the top 100 RPI in 2018.

For the first time in American Athletic Conference history, the league will host a conference tournament with the winner receiving the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The three-day event will be held at the site of the champion from the previous year and will take place in Orlando in its inaugural season.

To kick of the 2019 campaign, the Cougars will host Rice for an exhibition match on Aug. 23 inside the Fertitta Center, the new home of Houston Volleyball. The Cougars open their regular season hosting the 10th annual Flo Hyman Collegiate Cup, Aug. 30-31, when Houston welcomes LSU, Arizona State, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and UT Arlington.

The Cougars will then embark on an 11-match road swing, participating in three tournaments, along with a trio of midweek competitions. Houston will get the road trip started with a trip to Lake Charles, La., where the Cougars will face McNeese on Sept. 3.

From there, Houston will travel to San Antonio for the UTSA Classic, where the Cougars will square up against UTSA, Maryland and UTRGV across Sept. 6-7. Following the two-day event, Houston will return to Southeast Texas and travel to Beaumont for a midweek competition against Lamar on Sept. 10.

Following the trip to Beaumont, the Cougars will continue their road swing and head to Waco, Texas, for the Baylor Invitational from Sept. 12-13. While in Waco, the Cougars will go up against a pair of 2018 NCAA Tournament teams in Baylor and Tennessee.

The Cougars then return to Houston for a contest on the campus of Houston Baptist on Sept. 17. Houston will conclude its road trip in Lubbock, Texas, and compete in the Red Raider Classic, where Houston will face Texas Tech, UTEP and Incarnate Word from Sept. 20-21.

Houston opens up American Athletic Conference play on Sept. 27 and hosts SMU before rounding out the weekend with a home matchup against Memphis on Sept. 29. The Cougars will hit the road again for two weeks and face Wichita State (Oct. 11) and Tulsa (Oct. 13) after squaring up with Tulane (Oct. 4) and Temple (Oct. 6) on the road.

After its back-to-back weekend trips, the Cougars will welcome in ECU (Oct. 18) and Cincinnati (Oct. 20) to the Fertitta Center prior to traveling to Florida to face UCF (Oct. 25) and USF (Oct. 27). Houston rounds out the regular season with four of its final six matches at home.

On Nov. 1, the Cougars host Tulsa, followed by a match with Wichita State on Nov. 3. After its match with the Shockers, Houston will continue its homestand with a contest against Tulane on Nov. 8 before hosting UConn on Nov. 10.

Houston wraps up its regular season with pair of road contests, first a trip to Memphis on Nov. 15, followed by a trip to Dallas to face SMU on Nov. 17. The inaugural American Athletic Conference Championship will be held in Orlando, Fla., from Nov. 22-24.
