OPELIKA, Ala. – University of Houston senior Maddy Rayner drained six birdies on the way to a team-low 69 to lead the University of Houston Women's Golf program during the Second Round of the NCAA Auburn Regional at Saugahatchee Country Club.
Starting her day off No. 10 on the 6,371-yard, par-72 course Tuesday, Rayner made birdie on the 535-yard, par-5 hole. Despite a bogey on No. 11, the Southlake, Texas, native rallied with another birdie on No. 13 and added back-to-back efforts on Nos. 16-17.
Competing in her first NCAA Regional, Rayner added another birdie on the par-4 second hole and rebounded from a bogey on No. 4 to sink her final birdie of the day on the par-5 eighth hole to lead the Cougars and tie for 23rd at 147.
Like Rayner, freshmen Hannah Screen and Maria Jose Martinez are competing in their first NCAA postseason events this week with both shooting 74s on Tuesday. Screen was tied for 28th at 148, while Martinez was tied for 69th at 154.
Two-time American Athletic Conference Player of the Year Leonie Harm was tied for 46th at 150, while junior Amanda Elich stood in 95th at 171.
As a team, the Cougars made the second-biggest move up the leaderboard Tuesday. Houston bettered its First-Round score by 13 strokes and rose to 10th with a two-day total of 599.
No. 3 Duke held the second-day lead at 577 to stand two strokes in front of No. 17 Virginia. No. 11 Florida State and No. 6 Vanderbilt were tied for third at 580, while ECU was in fifth at 586. No. 13 Auburn and No. 42 Tennessee were tied for sixth at 589.

Through Tuesday's Second Round, Texas State's Anne-Charlotte Mora held the third-lowest individual score from a non-Top 6 team.
The top-6 teams and top-3 individuals not on a qualifying team advance to the NCAA Championships, set for May 17-22 at The Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark.

NCAA REGIONAL HISTORY
Houston has qualified for NCAA Regional play as a team every season in which the team was eligible. The program started in 2013-14 with four student-athletes competing as individuals at tournaments but was not allowed to compete as a team that year, per NCAA rules.
This is the second-highest seeding the Cougars received in NCAA Regional play. Houston competed as the No. 7 seed at the 2018 NCAA Austin Regional.
Harm is competing in her fourth straight NCAA Regional, joining Megan Thothong as the only Cougars to accomplish that feat. A year ago, she fired a Final-Round 65 at the Austin Regional to force a playoff and won on the seventh hole to advance to the NCAA Championships as an individual qualifier for the second time in her career.
Elich is competing in the second Regional of her career, becoming the eighth player in school history to play in multiple NCAA postseason events.
Rayner, Martinez and Screen are making their NCAA postseason debuts.
