Houston claims shot put championship on second day in Wichita
WICHITA, Kan. – The University of Houston Track & Field team earned a trio of podium finishes on the second day of competition at the 2019 American Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
The Houston throwers highlighted the second day of action at Cessna Stadium as Felipe Valencia earned a gold medal in the men's shot put, followed by Triston Gibbons in second-place and Priscilla Adejokun secured a third-place finish in the event on the women's side.

HOW IT HAPPENED ON THE MEN'S SIDE
Valencia would earn the first gold medal of the weekend for Houston after securing top honors in the men's shot put. The reigning 2019 American Indoor Champion in the shot put, earned his first outdoor title after posting a mark of 59-10.25 (18.24) on his sixth attempt. The senior led throughout the event and earns his third straight podium finish in the event at the outdoor championships.
Earning his first medal at The American Outdoor Track & Field Championships was Triston Gibbons who took home second-place in the men's shot put with a throw of 58-1 (17.70) on his second attempt, tying his lifetime best. The duo clinched 18 points towards the Houston point total.
Three-time American Athletic Conference Champion Amere Lattin cruised to a top finish in the 110-meter hurdles with a season-best 13.71. The Cougars would sweep the prelims as Devion Wilson finished second with a lifetime best 13.98, followed by Quivell Jordan in third-place at 14.30.
The 400-meter dash finals will feature four Cougars as Kahmari Montgomery led the field with a time of 45.98. Jermaine Holt took the second spot in the finals as he crossed the finish line at 46.67, followed by Tyrell Valentine in fifth-place at 47.58. Frederick Lewis completes the field for Houston in sixth-place at 47.70.
Once again, the men's squad would dominate the sprints as six Cougars booked lanes in the finals of the 100-meter dash. Defending champion Mario Burke led the field with a time of 10.29, followed by Travis Collins in third-place at 10.43, Brandon Taylor in fourth-place at 10.48, Edward Sumler IV in sixth-place at 10.484, Terence Ware in seventh-place at 10.50. Jordan Booker completes the field for Houston in the 100-meter after securing the eighth and final spot with a time of 10.52.
HOW IT HAPPENED ON THE WOMEN'S SIDE
Once again, the throwers shined for the Cougars as sophomore Priscilla Adejokun earned a third-place finish in the women's shotput, tacking on six points for Houston. Adejokun's best throw came on her third attempt when she earned a lifetime best mark of 50-10 (15.49). Adejokun's third-place is stark improvement from her 16th-place finish at last season's outdoor championships.
Hailey Pollard also closed out the day with a lifetime best throw of 44-6.75 (13.58) on her third attempt in the preliminary round.
Over at the long jump, junior Samiyah Samuels paced the Cougars with a fourth-place finish in the event, earning five points for the women's squad. Samuels best jump came on her fifth attempt at 19-11.75 (6.09).
Hawa Wague closed out the women's heptathlon with 4,683 points and sitting in the final scoring position at seventh-place and adding to the Cougar point total.
In the 100-meter hurdles, sophomore Naomi Taylor would lead the field with a time of 13.47 and automatically qualify for the finals.
Britani Gonzales and Jennifer Dunlap will represent Houston in the finals of the 1500-meter run, as Gonzales took fourth-place at 4:37.24. Dunlap finished not far behind in fifth-place at 4:33.24.
Cecilia Tamayo-Garza clocked a time of 11.75, nearly besting her personal record in the 100-meter dash to advance to the finals after finishing in fourth-place.
