Cougars play next four games on road
HOUSTON -- The University of Houston Baseball team fell 15-3 and 3-1 in a doubleheader to No. 11 ECU on Saturday at Don Sanders Field at Darryl & Lori Schroeder Park.
With the decisions, the Cougars move to 17-15 on the season and 3-6 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Pirates move to 24-7 overall and 8-1 in league action, clinching the series, 2-1.
ECU 15, HOUSTON 3
KEY INNINGS
1st | ECU scored three runs in the opening frame.
2nd | The Pirates added another run in the top of the second.
4th | Junior designated hitter Lael Lockhart Jr. homered to left field in the fourth.
5th | Houston added another run in the fifth to make it 4-2. Freshman center fielder Johnathon Thomas singled to the shortstop to open the frame. After moving up to third on a sac bunt from junior catcher Blake Way and a throwing error, Thomas came home on a two-out double from junior right fielder Tyler Bielamowicz.
6th | ECU hit a grand slam in the sixth.
7th | The Pirates scored two runs in the top of the seventh. In the bottom frame, junior shortstop Jared Triolo delivered Way with a sacrifice fly.
8th | ECU scored four runs in the eighth.
HOUSTON NOTES
Offense:
• Lockhart's solo homer highlighted a 1-for-3 showing.
• Thomas finished 2-for-2 with two singles.
• Bielamowicz's RBI double came in a 1-for-4 effort.
Pitching:
• Senior right-handed pitcher Ryan Randel (2-2) took the loss. He surrendered four runs (three earned) before being lifted in the second inning.
• Junior Sean Bretz tossed two and two-third innings, issuing just two hits and two walks while striking out three.
• Redshirt sophomore Spencer Hynes (1.2 IP) and juniors Tristen Bayless (1.0 IP), Carter Henry (1.2 IP) and Tyler Bielamowicz (1.0 IP) combined to go the rest of the way.
ECU 3, HOUSTON 1
KEY INNINGS
1st | Senior first baseman Joe Davis hit a two-out solo home run to left center in the bottom of the first.
7th | ECU scored two runs in the top of the seventh to take the lead.
8th | The Pirates added a run in the eighth for the 3-1 final to close the series.
HOUSTON NOTES
Offense:
• Davis' home run was his team-leading 13th of the season, a mark which ranks second in The American. Davis finished 2-for-3.
• Senior left fielder Rey Fuentes III and freshman designated hitter Derrick Cherry each singled twice in 2-for-4 efforts.
Pitching:
• Sophomore southpaw Clay Aguilar (2-3) surrendered two runs in the seventh inning to suffer the loss. The native of Deer Park, Texas, issued no walks and struck out a career-high nine batters across six and two-third innings in the start. Aguilar retired the Pirates in order through their first time through their lineup and 19 of his first 21 batters faced to start the game in total.
• Junior Devon Roedahl finished the game. He was taxed for one run in the eighth inning but bounced back and retired the side in the ninth.
The Cougars visit Sam Houston State on Tuesday for the second game of the Don Sanders Cup. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. from Don Sanders Stadium in Huntsville, Texas, and the game will air on ESPN+.

Gameday parking is offered in a different capacity than in prior years. Anyone entering Lot 16B (across the street from right field) will be subjected to paying a third party company employed by campus. This lot will no longer be an option for free parking on gamedays. All other lots surrounding the stadium will be free of charge two hours prior to first pitch.
