
Vesely Earns 100th Career Win in Shutout

Three-run first inning leads to victory
ORLANDO, Fla. – University of Houston Softball Head Coach Kristin Vesely picked up her 100th career win on Friday night, as the Cougars took down UCF by a score of 3-0. Her overall record at Houston is now 100-62 (.617).
Houston's win over the Knights (29-19, 7-9 AAC) extends the Cougars' (33-15, 9-6 AAC) winning streak to seven games, having won eight of their past nine contests overall. With three runs in the first inning, Houston moves to 14-1 on the year when scoring in the first inning and 23-3 when scoring before its opponent.
The shutout also marks the 16th time this season that Houston has blanked an opponent, as senior pitcher Savannah Heebner earned her 11th victory of the year, surrendering just three hits in her seven innings pitched. It's her fourth shutout of the season.
Offensively, the Cougars saw three players record multiple hits in the game, with senior outfielder Sarah Barker, and junior infielders Kelli Montgomery and Arielle James each recording two hits. Sophomore infielder Aspen Howie capped off the three-run first frame with a two-RBI double.
KEY INNINGS
1st | Houston continued its season-long trend of getting out ahead of opponents, as the Cougars hung three runs on the scoreboard in the inning. After a leadoff double from senior outfielder Sarah Barker, a sacrifice fly from junior infielder Arielle James quickly put Houston ahead by a run. Once junior infielder Kelli Montgomery kept the inning alive, back-to-back hits from the Cougars loaded the bases for sophomore infielder Aspen Howie. Her two-out double in the gap scored a pair of runs and supplied Houston with a 3-0 lead after the top of the first.
5th | In the top of the fifth, the Cougars threatened to stretch their lead and put more runs on the scoreboard with the bases loaded, but the Knights retired to side to keep the sore at 3-0.
