Cougars score three in the top of the seventh
With the win over the Bobcats (25-20), the Cougars (32-15) have now won their past six contests and improve to 10-1 on the year against opponents from the Lone Star State. The midweek victory also roves Houston's record to 8-1 this season in midweek competitions.
James' double in the top of the seventh capped off a 2-for-4 performance, posting a game-high two RBIs in the process. She was joined by senior catcher Brooke Vannoy, who tied a career-high with three hits, as those with multiple hits on the night for the Cougars.
Senior outfielder Maya Thomas extended her hitting streak to six games with her base hit in the fifth inning. Coming out of the bullpen for the fifth time this season, senior pitcher Presley Bell earned her 11th win of the year, tossing 4.2 shutout innings, allowing two hits during that stretch.
1st | The Bobcats struck first in the contest and grabbed the first lead of the game with a run in the bottom of the first.
3rd | After plating another run in the second, Texas State stretched its lead with a single that brought around the third run of the game for the Bobcats.
5th | Senior outfielder Maya Thomas got the inning started with a base-hit and with the bases loaded, senior catcher Brooke Vannoy stepped into the box and recorded her second hit of the game to score Thomas and trim the Cougar deficit to two.
7th | Once sophomore infielder Aspen Howie and sophomore infielder Charese Wyatt reached base to start the inning, Vannoy placed a perfect bunt on the ground to load the bases for Houston with nobody out. After senior outfielder Sarah Barker brought around Howie from third, the Cougars trailed by a run with junior infielder Arielle James due up. James came up to bat and hit a rocket down the leftfield line to score Wyatt and Vannoy to give Houston a 4-3 lead, which proved to be the difference in the game.
