Cougars win sixth-straight conference game
The Cougars (31-15, 8-6 AAC) opened up the day with an 8-4 victory over the Tigers (21-25, 3-11 AAC), before taking down Memphis by a score of 6-3 in the second contest. With the doubleheader sweep, Houston has now won its past six conference games, including five-straight overall.
On the day, Houston's offense was led primarily by senior outfielder Maya Thomas, who roved through the Tigers and went a combined 6-for-8, including a 4-for-4 outing in game two. In game one senior outfielder Sarah Barker put together a 3-for-4 performance and tied her season-high with three RBIs in the contest.
Houston's second game of the day saw standout a performance from junior infielder Kelli Montgomery, who tallied two hits and pair of RBIs. Sophomore infielder Aspen Howie led the third inning off with a solo home run, her second of the season.
In the circle, senior pitcher Presley Bell got things going for Houston in game one, giving up five hits and no walks to earn her 10th win of the season. The afternoon matchup saw senior pitcher Savannah Heebner put together another strong outing, as her eight strikeouts and one earned run led to her 17th complete game of the year.
KEY INNINGS
1st | The Tigers took the first lead of the game, scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to grab hold of a 2-0 lead heading into the second.
2nd | After the Cougars opened the inning putting a pair of runners in scoring position, Houston capitalized on a costly mistake from the Tigers, as a fielding blunder from Memphis allowed junior infielder Sarah Queen and sophomore infielder Aspen Howie to score and tie the game at two.
4th | Houston's offense exploded in the top of the inning, as four runs off four hits gave the Cougars a four-run advantage. Once the senior infielder Rachel Hill used a pinch-hit single to score senior first baseman Savannah Heebner, she made her way to third after senior outfielder Maya Thomas collected her first hit of the game. After junior outfielder Lindsey Stewart reached on a Tiger fielding error that allowed Hill to score, senior outfielder Sarah Barker stepped up to the plate and drove in both runners to cap off a four-run inning for the Cougars. In the bottom of the frame, a solo home run from the Tigers trimmed the Houston lead to three, 6-3.
