
Houston Splits Squad for Weekend Meets

Cougars split squad in pair of weekend meets in California and Houston
HOUSTON – The Houston Cougar Men's and Women's Track & Field team will split up this weekend as a portion of the team will travel to California to compete in the Mt. SAC Relays across April 18-20, while a group of student-athletes will compete in the J. Fred Duckett Twilight Invitational at Rice.

ABOUT THE MT. SAC RELAYS
The 2019 MT. SAC Relays will be held at El Camino College in Torrance, Calif..

The three-day meet kicks off Thursday at 12 p.m. CT, with the men's collegiate hammer throw, while running events start at 7:50 p.m. CT, with the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase. Friday's action will begin at 1 p.m. CT, with both the men's collegiate 110-meter hurdles prelims and collegiate long jump.

The final day of competition sees a later start, with field events beginning at 3 p.m. CT, with the elite invitational high jump, while the women's elite 4x100-meter relay opens the final running slate at 3:15 p.m. CT.

ABOUT THE J. FRED DUCKETT TWILIGHT INVITATIONAL
Rice's second home meet of the season will be a one-day event, held on Saturday, April 20. Action starts in the field at 9:30 a.m. CT, with the men's discus, while the afternoon running session kicks off with the women's 100-meter at 3:45 p.m. CT. The evening running session starts with the women's 4x100-meter relay at 6 p.m.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR

On the men's side:

Nicholas Alexander will be competing in the 100-meter dash as he looks to bump up his No. 5 ranking with a time of 10.35 in The American Athletic Conference. Alexander will also compete in the 200-meter dash invitational where he sits at fourth in the conference with a time of 20.76.

Brandon Taylor is currently second in The American in the 100-meter dash at 10.18 and will be competing in the event. Terence Ware will also be competing in the event where he ranks eighth in The American with a time of 10.44. Another athlete competing is Travis Collins who is currently third in the conference with a time of 10.19. Finally, conference leader Mario Burke will round out the field for the Cougars in the 100-meter with a conference-best time of 10.07.

Competing at the J. Fred Duckett Twilight Invitational in the 100-meter dash is Edward Sumler IV as he looks to improve his No. 8 ranking in The American. He currently sits at eighth with a time of 10.44. Sumler IV will also compete in the 200-meter dash and is sixth in the conference with a time of 20.95.

Jermaine Holt will compete in the 400-meter dash as well, heading into the meet second in the conference with a time of 46.55. Frederick Lewis will complete the field for the Cougars in the 400-Meter, sitting at fourth in The American at 47.29.

Cameron Laverty will compete in the 800-meter run as he sits second in the American Athletic Conference ranking with a time of 1:50.79. Christian Gilmore will also compete in the event where he is fifth in The American standings with a time of 1:52.25.

The 110-meter hurdles will feature Quivell Jordan the second-ranked hurdler in The American with a time of 14.17. Jordan will also compete in the 400-meter hurdles, an event where is is second in the conference and fourth in the nation.

Coming in at No. 1 in the conference ranked and fifth nationally, hurdler Amere Lattin will compete in the 110-meter hurdles invitational. He will enter the race with a season-best time of 13.40. Lattin will also compete in the 400-meter hurdles where he holds the best mark both in the conference and nationally.

Houston will compete in the men's 4x100-meter relay and look to maintain its position at No. 1 in the conference. The Cougars look to try to bump up to first in the nation, entering the event with a time of 38.45.

In the field events, Colin George and Brendon Rivera will compete in high jump where they are both tied for the No. 4 spot in The American with a height of 6-9.75 (2.08).

Lagarious McQuirter and Trumaine Jefferson will compete in the long jump. Entering the weekend first and third The American with marks of 25-8.00 (7.82) and 25-1.75 (7.66), respectively.

Triston Gibbons and Felipe Valencia will compete in the shotput, entering the event at first and third in the conference with marks of 59-11.25 (18.27) and 58-1.00 (17.70). Gibbons will also compete in the discus throw, looking to bump up to the No. 1 spot in the conference with a season-best mark of 179-4.00 (54.67).

Kenneth Sessums is currently sixth in the conference and will compete in the discus throw, entering the competition with a mark of 161-9.00 ( 49.30).

Competing at the J. Fred Duckett Twilight Invitational in the pole vault is Ben Percefull who sits at third in The American with a height of 16-6.75 (5.05).

The 100-meter dash will feature Essance Sample who is currently fifth in The American with a time of 11.54. Samiyah Samuels also will compete in the 100-meter dash where she ranks eighth in the conference with a time of 11.58. Samuels will compete in long jump as she ranks second in the conference with a mark of 20-7.25 (6.28).

Britani Gonzales will compete in the 1,500-meter run invitational where she ranks sixth in the conference with a time of 4:30.33.

The 100-meter hurdles will be highlighted by conference-leader Naomi Taylor who will enter the race with a time of 12.84. Taylor will also compete in long jump where she is sixth in the league with a mark of 19-7.50 (5.98).

Birexus Hawkins will highlight the 400-meter hurdles and is currently The American leader in the event at 58.04.

Houston will enter a pair of relays into the Mt. Sac. Relays starting with the women's 4x100-meter relay. The squad enters the race with a time of 44.77, currently third in The American. The women's 4x400-meter squad will also compete in the invitational event and is fourth in The American with a time of 3:43.18.

Priscilla Adejokun enters the weekend seventh in the conference in the shotput with a mark of 46-10.00 (14.27) and will compete in the event, along with Hailey Pollard. Pollard is currently fifth in the conference with a mark of 159-6.00 (48.61).
