Hertenberger tosses career-high seven innings
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Softball team completed its first series sweep of the season on Sunday afternoon with a 2-1 victory over UConn.
Â
Sunday's win against the Huskies (15-24, 4-8 AAC) extends Houston's conference winning streak to a season-high four games. With the series sweep this weekend, the Cougars (29-15, 6-6 AAC) have now won 11 of their past 13 games against the Huskies and improve to 9-0 all-time when playing UConn at Cougar Softball Stadium.
Â
Earning her fifth victory of the season, freshman pitcher Rachel Hertenberger tossed her first career seven-inning complete-game on Sunday, having allowed no walks in a start for the first time in her career. She finished the contest needing just 96 pitches, striking out five batters in the process.
Â
At the plate, some timely hitting from the Cougars proved to be the difference in the game, as back-to-back RBIs from senior catcher Brooke Vannoy and junior outfielder Lindsey Stewart in the bottom of the fifth, scored Houston's only two runs of the game.
