Cougars walk off San Diego in eight innings
RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The University of Houston Softball team split its doubleheader at the Highlander Classic on Saturday, taking down San Diego 6-5 in eight innings, before falling to UC Riverside by a score of 4-3.
With the split decision, the Cougars move to 17-8 on the season. In Houston's first game of the day against the Toreros (9-13), the Cougars won in walk-off fashion, thanks to junior infielder Arielle James singling in the game-winning run and scoring freshman outfielder Bethany Busch.
In the Cougars' second contest against the Highlanders (8-12), Houston took a three-run lead into the bottom of the seventh inning, but was unable to hold the advantage, as UC Riverside scored four times to win 4-3.
Senior outfielder Sarah Barker collected a pair of hits in both games, going 4-for-7 on the day with a run scored. With a hit in each contest today, junior outfielder Lindsey Stewart has now reached base safely in each of her past 15 games.
GAME 1: HOUSTON 6, SAN DIEGO 5 (8)
KEY INNINGS
2nd | After junior infielder Kelli Montgomery scored the first run of the game off a wild pitch, junior infielder Sarah Queen brought around Houston's second run with a single through the left side that scored junior infielder Arielle James. With the bases loaded and nobody out, sophomore infielder Caela Kincade scored Queen thanks to a sacrifice fly to right field. Junior outfielder Lindsey Stewart then doubled home senior outfielder Maya Thomas to put Houston ahead 4-0 at the end of the inning.
4th | The Toreros put up their first run of the game and cut into the Houston lead. The run ended freshman pitcher Rachel Hertenberger's scoreless inning streak at 13 innings.
6th | A two-run home run scored San Diego's first runs of the inning and after plating two more, the Toreros tied the game at five.
8th | With freshman outfielder Bethany Busch on second, James came up to the plate and singled home Busch to give the Cougars the 6-5 walk-off win in extra innings.

2nd | Senior pitcher Savannah Heebner launched her first home run of the season, with her solo shot to left to put Houston ahead by a run.
4th | After James led the inning off with a double down the leftfield line, Queen then collected a double of her own, allowing James to score on the play and stretch the Cougar lead to two. In the bottom of the inning, the Highlanders came knocking at the door to strike back, as a leadoff double from them put a runner in scoring position with nobody out. Heebner then showed off her leather in the field as a line drive back to her started a one-four double play to end the threat.
6th | Following a leadoff single from sophomore infielder Charese Wyatt, Busch came in and pinch ran at first base. Once a single from James put a pair of runners on, Queen collected a single of her own to bring around Busch and put the Cougars ahead by three.
7th | The Highlanders clawed their way back into the game and scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to win 4-3.
